Amarcord

It's late Fellini, so self-indulgence is a given - especially since this is presented as the director's nostalgic memories of his own childhood in Fascist-era Rimini. (The title is local dialect for "I remember".) Still, if you've a taste for Federico's personal brand of flamboyant baroque, there's plenty of fun on offer - including, of course, such trademark elements as impassioned family rows, dwarf nuns and ladies of very generous proportions. There are moments of wistful beauty, too. Look out especially for the dreamlike image of a peacock in a snowstorm, while Mussolini's strutting buffoons provide ripe material for mockery.
