If there’s a holy trinity of sitcoms it surely consists of Seinfeld, The Simpsons and now, Arrested Development. However, unlike the first two, Arrested wasn’t allowed to develop an audience, being killed before its prime after only three seasons. Fortunately, the sharpest, smartest and – best of all – funniest show of the last decade ends its brief tenure with more wit than a lifetime of lesser comedies. Apologies to Homer and Tony Soprano, but the Bluths may just be TV’s greatest ever family. Shallow, Machiavellian and barely functioning as human beings, they provide not only laugh-out-loud silliness but also a quality of smart satire unique in sitcomland. What DVD was made for.
