Atlantic City5

The finest of Louis Malle’s American films, with Susan Sarandon grabbing her first truly worthwhile part with both hands and Burt Lancaster magisterial in one of his greatest roles. Burt’s a washed-up, small-time hood, living off illusions of the past; Susan’s a would-be croupier with fantasies of Monte Carlo; and around them the faded boardwalk glories of Atlantic City are succumbing to the wrecker’s ball. Warm, witty, compassionate – but with some masterfully staged action sequences – Malle’s film offers a wry elegy for the American Dream. No extras.
