Baz Luhrmann has always loved plunging into the cinematic deep end without a lifejacket: it’s the hallmark of his showboating career, from neoncamp debut Strictly Ballroom to the consumption addled delirium of Moulin Rouge!.

This is a good film only for three reasons, first, the story, second, the setting and third the cinematic style. The only problem is that they were all taken from Sergio Leone's masterpiece "Once upon a time in the West". The second the film finished using Leone's vast dessert shots and extreme close ups, leaving the "Once upon a time..." story line it all fell apart. It's length was a problem and when it did finally finish it didn't finish satisfactorily. Overall, the cinema should have just re-shown "Once Upon a Time in the West"

A cliched movie that is more a cobbled badly contrived tribute to old movies than a tribute to Australia. Mimicry must be done well to be appreciated otherwise it is simply mockery and sadly this film fails to maintain its quality. There are some good set peices, the attack on Darwin, the tense moments during the cattle drive thorugh the Australian wilderness. But generally this movie fails to deliver, thanks to its 2 dimensional lead chsracters and a over long loosely put together script. Sorry Mr Jackman you can act, but you should have kept your shirt on an insisted on a character with a bit more flesh to it, rather than thinking offering a little eye candy would gloss over this movies flaws.
