Beowulf & Grendel3

Back in the days when men quaffed mead and even babies had beards, a poem was penned and the seeds of two 2007 movies planted. Of the two, Beowulf & Grendel has a better script and a more intense, convincing hero in Gerard Butler. It’s also a lot less fun. Backdropped by a stark Icelandic landscape (a nightmare shooting location, according to the slight but fascinating extras), it’s an intelligent epic, but if you prefer monsters, gore and shouting to musings on mercy, temperance and loyalty, stick with Ray Winstone.
