Blowup4

Inspiring everyone from Francis Ford Coppola to Mike Myers, Michelangelo Antonioni's arty thriller remains an absorbing, eerie enigma. As DoP Carlo Di Palma's cracking camerawork keeps '60s London swinging, Antonioni interrogates truth and cinema through the late David Hemmings' vacant playboy photographer Thomas. In between romping with nudie floozies and ragging his convertible around the city, Thomas discovers a dead body in the background of one of his photographs and attempts to investigate. But reality proves a slinky conceit, with Antonioni shooting from the hip - cynical and loaded - to reveal that everyone and everything is posing for his camera. Existential bafflement has never been groovier, baby.
