Braveheart review

Film description

In a nutshell:

Mel Gibson turns the story of 13th-century Scottish freedom fighter William Wallace into a rousing, action-heavy epic.

William Wallace: ‘It’s all for nothing if you don’t have freedom.’

William Wallace: ‘Aye, fight and you may die. Run, and you'll live... at least a while. And dying in your beds, many years from now, would you be willin' to trade ALL the days, from this day to that, for one chance, just one chance, to come back here and tell our enemies that they may take our lives, but they'll never take... OUR FREEDOM!’

Malcolm Wallace: ‘Your heart is free. Have the courage to follow it.’

It’s the 13th century. Young William Wallace, his family, and his fellow countrymen are facing oppression from England, which is ruled over by King Edward I (AKA Longshanks).

Having invaded and conquered Scotland in 1280, the English have reigned tyrannically over the Scots for years. After travelling to Europe for an education, Wallace returns to his village to marry his childhood sweetheart Murron.

Taking advantage of one of their privileges, the English rulers discover the secretly married woman and rape her, slitting her throat to make a chilling example against defiance.

This personal tragedy spurs Wallace on to lead an uprising against the British, in an attempt to secure the freedom of Scotland forever.

Better on Blu-ray:

Mel Gibson’s brutal battles look and sound epic on Blu-ray.

“They may take our lives, but they’ll never take our FREEDOM!” As William Wallace’s spine-tingling war cry rings out in crystal-clear, hi-def surround sound, you’ll feel like you’re right there on the battlefield, standing alongside him. Mel Gibson’s Oscar-winning Scottish epic is an amazingly immersive experience on Blu-ray, complete with a stunning picture transfer and a raft of bonus features including the exclusive Picture-in-Picture track ‘William Wallace’s World’ – a fascinating, interactive look at the locations and military strategies of the Scottish rebellion – as well as archive documentaries, historical featurettes and cast and crew interviews. What really impresses though, are the film’s furious combat sequences, which will have your speakers thundering, your screen flecked with mud and blood and your movie-night pals dodging spears behind the sofa....

The battle scenes you have to see on Blu-ray...

'The Battle Of Stirling Bridge'

“I see a whole army of my countrymen, here in defiance of tyranny!” Painted in woad and ready for action, Wallace delivers a rousing speech to his motley crew of warriors before leading the charge against the evil English on the fields of Stirling. Blu-ray’s mighty picture and sound presents the battle’s every gory detail with jaw-dropping clarity – limbs fly and heads roll, all in glorious hi-def.

'The Sacking Of York'

The unstoppable Wallace and his loyal followers break down the gates of the walled city of York with a huge battering ram, dodging (or in some cases not, as the blood-curdling screams attest) raining torrents of boiling oil as they go. Blu-ray really ignites this short but brutal siege: with flaming arrows piercing the blackened night sky, the scene brilliantly showcases the richness and depth of hi-definition.

'The Battle Of Falkirk'

Braveheart’s climactic battle is also its bloodiest, as Wallace’s militia face the full might of England’s army – led by King Edward Longshanks himself – on the fields of Falkirk. This spectacular skirmish is just what Blu-ray was made for – vividly brought to life in high-definition, the charging horses, raining arrows and clanging steel bring the full shock and awe of medieval warfare bursting into your living room.
