A lost treasure worth rediscovering, Peter Yates’ tart, truthful youth movie pedals through feelgood coming-of-age conventions with sure emotional and social grip. A cycling race against posh kids gives four small-town working-class buds in Indiana a chance to “find themselves”. Jackie Earle Haley, Dennis Quaid and Daniel Stern head up the standard teen travails, but Dennis Christopher leads as kooky Dave, while Steve Tesich’s Oscar-winning script and Bullitt man Yates’ easygoing direction add warm nuance. Think American Graffiti on bicycles.
