Bright Future3

Prolific Japanese filmmaker Kiyoshi Kurosawa has churned out movies since the ’80s. Some are creepy J-horrors like Pulse and Seance, others more cerebral and disconcerting. Bright Future belongs to the latter camp, as sulky Tokyo slackers Mamoru (Ichi The Killer’s Tadanobu Asano) and Yûji ( Jô Odagiri) clash violently with their overbearing boss. Kurosawa keeps his plot meandering and his point vague while hinting at the alienated state of Japanese youth. It’s an inert, shapeless film but – much like Mamoru’s pet jellyfish – it has a haunting strangeness.
