Chariots Of Fire2

1982: Chariots wins Best Picture. 2004: Chariots is left out of Total Film's Brit flick top 50. Harsh maybe, but inevitable for a sports drama that represents heritage cinema at its most stuffy and inert. Want more proof? How about the fact that virtually no one involved came close to repeating the unlikely success this tale of '20s toffs turned gold-winning Olympians enjoyed here and abroad? Hugh Hudson made Revolution; Ben Cross Turbulence; while Colin Welland's 15 minutes ran out the second he declared "The British are coming!" Oh, they came all right. Then they zipped their flies and took the first plane home.
