Echoing both The Quiet American and The Third Man, Matt Dillon's directorial debut is high on atmosphere but low on thrills. The erstwhile Brat Packer also stars as Jimmy, a New York broker under investigation by the FBI, who heads to Cambodia to search for the crooked associate (James Caan) who left him carrying the can. Gérard Depardieu and Natascha McElhone drift through the action as a hotelier and art restorer respectively, but neither they, nor a sarong-sporting Caan, prevent Ghosts becoming a ponderous travelogue through Indonesia's most picturesque slums.
