Days Of Being Wild4

Wong Kar-Wai's second feature, made in 1992, reveals the flavours he's famous for, setting its tale of romantic irresolution to an improvisatory, musical sensibility and lush imagery that creates a dream state for his characters to drift in. With the '60s Hong Kong setting prefiguring In The Mood For Love, time and romantic opportunity slip through Leslie Cheung's character's fingers as he embarks on a career of erotic non-commitment - fuelled by family hang-ups - that surely isn't going to end well. The plotting is distinctly unconventional but, with Wong's direction waltzing in tune to Cheung's ambivalence, it offers the kind of deep-end atmospherics you can plunge into.
