A Chinese Ghost Story - DVD Review
Extras
If Bollywood’s a mix of the musical and melodramatic, then Hong Kong cinema often slings comedy and chopsocky into the pot and hopes for the best. A lot of the time it emerges as a mess but sometimes something truly tasty tumbles out.
A Chinese Ghost Story falls somewhere in between, its twitchy stop-motion monsters and shonky dialogue giving it bumbling charm as a bizarre tale of humble clerks, deadly swordsmen and vampires unravels before our startled eyes. Feet up, beer open, enjoy: it’s Carry On Screaming with wirework.
Eastern-cinema expert Bey Logan drawls out another informative commentary while interviews with actor Wu Ma and producer Tsui Hark bulk things up. All very well, but it’s difficult to swallow the reverential tone – anyone would think they’re talking about Lawrence Of Arabia.
