A Fish Called Wanda Special Edition - DVD Review

Title
Extras
It’s Ealing comedy fast-forwarded to the ’80s as John Cleese’s stuffy lawyer gets involved with Jamie Lee Curtis’ sexy Yank and her jewellery-snatching criminal buddies. Cleese’s cracking script gives it a solid foundation, but it’s the supporting cast who make this movie wanda-ful: Michael Palin’s stammering fish-fancier Ken, Curtis’ sultry-yet-daffy femme fatale Wanda, and a hilarious Kevin Kline as nutcase Otto.
A very Cleese-centric disc, the gangly Python genius popping up on the commentary, in a 50-minute documentary and the deleted scenes voiceover. Trouble is, it’s not always a good thing, Cleese being one of those funny guys who suddenly seems to go into dull-as-ditchwater mode whenever he talks about his work. Still, at least he lets us in on all the bits that had to be snipped, including doggy guts during one canine death and Otto’s habit of shooting cats’ tails.Thankfully, the second disc isn’t all Cleese’s show, his partners in crime popping up in a series of interviews, some conducted at the time, others 15 years on. A fine introduction if you’ve never seen the film (if not, why not?) and a detail-rich experience for fans. All together now: “ASSHOLE!”
