Buena Vista Social Club - DVD Review
Extras
Long-forgotten luminaries of ’50s Cuban big band music are fetched from retirement and/or obscurity by American rocker Ry Cooder to record an album in Havana. A mix of reminiscences, recording sessions and footage from ecstatically received concerts in Amsterdam and New York City, Teutonic helmer Wim Wenders’ documentary is stirring, emotive stuff.
Deleted scene, theatrical trailer, director’s commentary track, 16-page production notes booklet. If you’re already in love with the festive and hypnotic Buena Vista Social Club soundtrack, you can’t really go wrong with this DVD. Wenders’ thorough commentary (and, oddly, the single deleted scene included on the disc) fills in some of the blanks you get watching the film without it. It also offers a revealing picture of modern-day Cuba, as well as the Social Club-inspired revival of Cuban music.
