The Usual Suspects Special Edition - DVD Review
Extras
The then 27-year-old Bryan Singer eclipsed most other ’90s crime movies with this brilliantly slippery, cerebral thriller. A kind of film noir/post-modern haunted heist movie, it backtracks from an explosive opening to discover how five hardened criminals (Gabriel Byrne, Kevin Spacey, Stephen Baldwin, Kevin Pollak, Benicio Del Toro) were united by Keyser Söze, a mysterious, malevolent mastermind.
Commentaries with editor/composer John Ottman, director Bryan Singer and writer Christopher McQuarrie, four featurettes, gag reel, interviews, outtakes, deleted scenes, TV spots. The featurettes are polished, recently produced reflections on the now-legendary film, revealing the importance of Del Toro’s flatulence to production and affording Pollak the chance to amusingly slag off Baldwin. But it’s the commentaries that knock this disc up to near essential, with McQuarrie and Singer – friends since school – a funny, hugely infomative double act.
