Or We Own The Night And A Lot Of Old ’70s Movies On VHS. The Conformist, The Godfather, The French Connection – all named by writer/director James Gray in the Making Of that accompanies his first feature since 2000’s The Yards; another moody thriller whose ambition doesn’t quite translate into a picture with its own soul and identity. With Joaquin Phoenix as the black sheep, Mark Wahlberg his good-cop brother and Robert Duvall the police patriarch, the acting is meaty. But the Noo Yawk crime-life never escapes the shadow of its mighty influences.
