Ealing receives a DVD boost to coincide with the studio's 100th anniversary, and it's a timely showcase for a unique brand of English humour that took twee post-war Britain and barbed it with dark wit and ironic subversion. All four films featured here grandstand the superb Alec Guinness. Kind Hearts And Coronets pitches him as eight familial victims snuffed by a snubbed heir, The Ladykillers' tale of holed-up crooks plays out like a comic proto-Reservoir Dogs, The Lavender Hill Mob hints at gentler criminal minds and The Man In The White Suit mixes the politics of science and class struggle in a delightfully fuzzy way. A quartet of classic, must-own films.
