Edvard Munch4

Brit-director Peter Watkins has always marched to his own defiant drum. So this biopic of Norway’s greatest painter stretches to a three-and-a-half-hour running time and uses a cast of mostly amateurs. His boldness pays off beautifully. Flipping back and forth to take in a haunted childhood, repressive upbringing and an affair with a married woman, Watkins shows how Munch’s style grew out of his own anguished life.
