In a Nutshell:
The employees of an independent music store try to fight off a large chain, all while learning about each other.
They're selling music but not selling out.
Debra: 'Hey Lucas, is it true you committed the perfect crime?'
Lucas: 'Not entirely perfect.'
'Let me explain it to you. Mitchell's the man. I'm the idiot. You're the screw-up. And we're all losers. Welcome to Music Town.'
Empire Records, a small independent music store, is ran by Joe (Anthony LaPaglia), a father figure to his group of young misfit employees.
Lucas (Rory Cochrane) is trusted to close the store one night, only to discover that Empire is going to be sold and become a branch of the corporate music store, Music Town.
On a whim, Lucas takes the store's cash and heads to Atlantic City, in an attempt to win big and save the store from selling out. While initially successful, he unfortunately loses it all.
After Joe finally finds out the next day Lucas lost nine grand of the store's money, he informs all the employees Empire is being sold and turned into a Music Town.
In addition to this saddening news, they must also put up with a spoiled has-been rock star named Rex Manning, who's in town promoting his new album.
None of the employees are pleased of his presence, except for Cory (Liv Tyler) who has a schoolgirl crush on him.
Despite the problems the employees have with each and within themselves, they band together to try and save their beloved store from corporate greed, learning a little more about each other in the process.
