Fantastic Four

Fantastic Four

Fantastic Four review

Film description

In a nutshell:

A bunch of scientists become superheroes with diverse powers after a chance encounter with a solar storm.

Ben Grimm: ‘Typical of Victor Von Doom to build a 30 foot statue of himself.’

Nurse: ‘My God! Your hot!’
Johnny Storm: ‘Why, thank you. So are you.’

Ben Grimm: ‘It's clobbering time!’

Renowned scientist Reed Richards (Ioan Gruffudd) is launched into space with his best bud Ben Grimm (Michael The Shield Chiklis), ex-squeeze Sue Storm (Jessica Alba), her cocky bro Johnny (Chris Evans) and corporate-science hack Victor Von Doom (Nip/Tuck’s Julian McMahon). They’re all there to harness a solar storm’s energy to reveal secrets of human DNA. Instead, they get hit by the energy and undergo genetic changes that ‘reflect’ their emotional states.

So the overstretched Reed becomes rubberised Mr Fantastic; Sue, who feels ignored, becomes The Invisible Woman (with a nice line in forcefields); Johnny, who’s... um, ‘hot’, becomes The Human Torch; and Reed’s rock, Ben, becomes, well, rock. Victor is victim to Marvel über-villain Doctor Doom’s origin story onto the FF’s, so he starts to control electricity and turn into metal, necessitating Doom’s trademark metal mask and cloak.

Inevitably everything heads towards a showdown between the heroes and Doom...

Better on Blu-ray:

‘The Final Showdown’

While much of the film was spent dealing with the back story, the moment we were all waiting for arrives in the final act showdown. Doom’s powers have been growing, and he decides to vent his rage on the city of New York.

Thankfully the Fantastic Four have come to terms with their powers and they team up to take on the big bad. Harnessing their unique powers, Sue summons an impressive forcefield, Ben does some clobbering, Reed stretches himself to snapping point and Johnny just shows off with his impressive flame-flight.
