An Ian Fleming figure forever in search of his 007, Alistair MacLean (Where Eagles Dare) must have wept when he saw his charged revenger’s tragedy turned into a kitschy, car chase-heavy filler thriller. Still, the film has some aces up its (denim) sleeve. Underwater salvage expert-on-the-run Barry Newman (Vanishing Point) makes a satisfactorily slap-happy Bronson stand-in, Ben Kingsley (with hair!) smoulders with brittle menace in his debut, and the clammy, oxygen-starved climax aboard a sub is a triumph. Time for a Bourne-style update?
