100 Greatest Movies Of All Time

The best films ever made, voted by you

BY Total Film Oct 17th 2006 18:18PMFILED UNDER: Features

Normally, these 100 Greatest Film lists are the kind of things compiled from votes by illustrious members of the film industry, journalists and scholars. Not today. Not this list.

Nope, in a stoke of madness/genius, we've decided to hand over responsiblity of deciding the 100 greatest films to you, our educated, informed and passionate readership.

10-1

10. Donnie Darko

Richard Kelly's stunning debut is a bold fusion of 1980s pop music, theoretical phsyics (wormholes, Einstein-Rosen Bridges and timetravel), giant imaginary rabbits, Sparkle Motion and awesome.

In case none of that has persuaded you to jump on board like Keanu on a bus, the film also features Patrick Swayze. That's right. It's simply that awesome.

Consistently voted as one of the greatest feature debuts of all time, and now as one of the greatest films of all time, despite the fact that no-one, anywhere, ever, has a clue what it's about.

PS That song by Gary Jules was good for a bout 5 minutes. Now we want to shoot people.

9. Jaws

Smile, you son of a bitch! You've just made it to the number 9 Greatest Film Of All Time! If it were up to us, this would be a couple of places higher on the list, but as we've handed the job to you in our infinite wisdom, we'll have to grin and bear it, like Bruce there.

Spielberg's first foray into the blockbuster he would end up defining, Jaws was a production beset by problems. Weather, water, film stock, failing animatronics and sinking sharks all contributed to the misery of the months-over long shoot.

Containing peerless performances from Scheider, Richard Dreyfus and Robert Shaw especially, Jaws has some of the most quotable dialogue, the scariest jumps and most thrilling sequences of all time. Not to mention terrifying several generations of filmgoer.

A perfect film. Altogether now; "Farewell and adieu to you fare Spanish ladies..."

8. The Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring

The film that reignited the fantasy genre, launched the careers of several A-List stars and kick-started an obsession that has had an unfathomable effect on pop-culture, Fellowship is a massively important film in terms of 21st century cinema.

7. The Godfather

6. GoodFellas

5. The Shawshank Redemption

4. The Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King

3. Pulp Fiction

2. Fight Club

1. Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back

Okay, there are a lot downers who have posted mean things. Everyone to their own opinion as I say.
Here a list of what movies I think DO deserve to be on this list:
*King Kong (2005, I'm SO happy it's this version)
*Kill Bill Vol1
*Toy Story 2
*LOTR trilogy
But... I do think Schindler's list should of been higher up than 27 and I'm SHOCKED that The Pianist wasn't even there, (It's my favourite film).
And to finish No.1 SHOULD HAVE BEEN SHAWSHANK! EVERYONE LOVES SHAWSHANK. :.( tear...
