This one didn't really make sense for us on first watch.
The guy's a biologist, so surely he'd be interested in a dead alien? And if he's so freaked out by an alien corpse, why isn't he scared of a live one?
But, as Ridley explains, he's not actually a general biologist, he specialises.
"It's a guy who is an entomologist, small creatures and insects.
"This is the first real violent piece of the film, I think people aren't suspecting what can happen from such a small slender object as that."
So, giant decapitated corpse - not his speciality. But live alien worm, fascinating, and within his field of expertise.
We still think it's a bit too scary looking to want to give it a cuddle straight away, but we guess Millburn felt protected by his suit - which must be pretty sturdy.

Nice to have some things cleared up. I felt the film was mostly a muddled mess - no shortage of interesting ideas but lacking any sort of coherence. I'll probably give it another go, but I'm not that hopeful I'll change my opinion about the film.

Hang on - was Guy Pearce in The King's Speech? Or is Ridley having a senior moment and thinking that Colin Firth was Guy Pearce in that film? I also thought Pearce was Australian (haven't heard his normal accent).

The fact they feel the need to explain everything says it all: Why not make a film with a story people can enjoy, rather than a load of philosophical what if's that actually add up to nothing. Who cares if Vickers is Weyland's daughter? That's not a twist. It's information that carries precious little weight and adds nothing of dramatic value to what is occurring on screen. The film could be 5 hours long and still be pants.

What really annoys me about this article is you say things like 'well, this didn't make sense the first time but now we have all this info from the commentary, it's great!' - it should make sense FIRST TIME! If it doesn't, it's a failure. Which this film definitely DEFINITELY is!!!! Utter w**k.

MASSIVE SPOILERS Such a frustrating film, even after the 2nd viewing it didn't deserve. The production design was largely fantastic in my opinion...although the space suits are a bit naff. Just can't understanding how this film making team would get characters and their reaction to scenarios so wrong!!? Why have Idris Elba and Rafe Spall doing c**p accents!? Why not spend about 10 minutes early establishing some sort of dynamic between the crew so we might care about them a tiny bit? But ultimately, by striving to me SO clever and philosophical...it wasn't anywhere near clever enough. Oh, so the xenomorphs just end up happening as a natural step in the hyper evolution...What a let down

The mere fact that TF say they are massive fans of a film they did not understand the first time around (and probably still don't) is ludicrous. More to the point, trying to get people to agree with you by saying listen to the commentary is even more stupid. A commentary should be to explain maybe anecdotes on set, or why a director did certain things, not to explain the effing plot. Why should people have to pay for a blu-ray or dvd to listen to a commentary to then make sense of a film. You simply cannot say that this film was not a massive disappointment.

@Kellend Pearce was born in England to an English mother and New Zealander father. However, he has spent the majority of his life in Australia...so yeah, not seeing the angle Ridley Scott's coming from here...

I now think this should have been a TV series. With a build up on Earth (gathering the data, Shaws homelife), the background on Weyland, and more time spent on the characters. The 'answers' would have been drip-fed as the series went on. There is too much philosophical pondering to be crammed into 2 hours. In short, sh/t or get off the pot.

A joke isn't funny if you have to explain it. Prometheus was and still is a shambles, primarily because they were too busy trying to shoe-horn it into the Alien universe. One part of me wants to believe it was a genuine attempt at a quasi-prequel. The rest of me just thinks it was a lazy attempt to piggy back on an established mythology with no real idea of what the story was that they were actually trying to tell. The film is all middle.

What a load of horsesh!t - both this article and the movie! These comments don't answer any questions - just re-itterates what a terrible film this is! Point #8 - the part where the 'Map Man' gets friggin lost and the 'Scientist' starts talking to an alien species like a f*ckin kitten.............pretty much the point in the film when I gave up and stopped caring about what happens to any of these idiots! Worst film of the year and biggest disappointment by a mile!

Best set of comments - ever! Thanks guys. Expectation not met, it shouldn't need 'explaining' by watching the commentary version of the blu-ray disc with the alternate beginning and ending! Or the two prequels! So sad to say... it's all about the money - how much can be screwed out of us.

Wow, Prometheus is really getting a kicking on here! Am I the only one who really REALLY enjoyed it? @Senver "You simply cannot say that this film was not a massive disappointment." - You can if you let the massive over hype die down before you watch it. I loved Prometheus, yes I know its has flaws, but I thought the story was strong, the acting really convincing and the spectacle stunning. I love that it left me with questions galore, good science fiction should. Great film massively over marketed and over hyped!

Greetings from MJTuc First of all I loved Prometheus and in my opinion Ridley Scott is one of 3 directors that I classify as pure genius!! The suspense for Prometheus 2’s release is killing me with anticipation. The 11 Q/A posted above on this blog was nice but I already had a hunch on the answers and those particular questions and I was darn close; however, those weren't the primary concerns that I have. Unless I know 'EXACTLY' what David said to that Engineer; and remember these guys PLAY GOD; and as intelligent as these engineers are; I find it hard to believe he was insulted by someone simply trying to communicate but instead was faced with his brain carrying a simple fight or flight reaction; AND THEN got violent at David….at the translator, but most of all he has been taken by complete surprise and possibly panicking.. Remember; he was just woken up from a 2000 year hyper sleep and then confronted by races of their own creations knowing the that last time he knew humans we were complete religious barbarians and twisted time with the Gregorian calendar . Now in his face saying who knows what and I think he got the s**t scared out of him and acted accordingly. Think about it; as far as he knew, the new alien species that they were working on had escaped and could be still living (and they were) thriving to live, reproduce, breed, and populate. In the second movie,(Prometheus 2) if we find out they were planning to wipe us out, I hope Elizabeth Shaw and David Drop every single one of those canisters on their planet; and see how they like someone playing GOD with their life…

...no one asked about the first scene. The engineer is at a falls, where there's a giant spaceship hovering overhead then he takes this black soup which disintegrates his DNA in 10 seconds. WTF? I've seen this movie maybe 5 times but have not yet watched the BLU-RAY Directors narrative. I really wanted to watch it with sub-titles because you always miss some dialog and I use that with head phones? I watch most all interesting movies now with sub-titles turned on. There's a lot of bashing on this blog about the movie that I think is unjustified. Personally, I think the movie could have used another 6 weeks of planning to better flesh out the plot, characters, and back story. Other blogs also raised the problem of the distance stated at the lead-in to the movie, the time it took to get there and you wind up with a spacecraft traveling 20+ times the speed of light, 80 some years from now. What? My last complaint is Scott dodged the issue of a real language spoken by the Engineers. [e.g. Klingon, and Avatar]. They mumble in some kind of indistinct mumbo-jumbo.

I enjoyed the movie immensely although I must admit that I liked it better the second time around on Blu-Ray. I also must admit that on my first viewing I really was expecting (maybe because of the hype/marketing) more of an "Alien" type movie and therefore had some letdown. On my second viewing I didn't have those expectations and was able to more fully immerse myself in Prometheus for it's own sake...and enjoy it much more. I don't believe the basic plot of the movie was hard to follow or grasp at all. I do believe there are plenty of brain stimulating things for the viewer to work out on their own but frankly, I like a movie that challenges you to do some thinking. I still remember all the critical bashing of 'The Usual Suspects' as "too confusing". Now it is on a lot of lists on this site. I certainly haven't figured out every trail of thought from Prometheus (yet) but the director did a good job of making sure that I could still enjoy the main story even though I haven't figured out all the puzzles yet. This movie isn't over when the credits roll and for me it's the movie that just keeps on giving. Its also the perfect movie to sit around with friends over some beers and debate the night away.

Scott just wanted it to stand enough on it's own in case a sequel wasn't confirmed. But there is more coming. I think a lot of people are upset because they don't have all the answers, right now. They are upset because the director want's you to connect some of the dors. Did you get upset when the first LOTR movie ended? C'mon people. Expand your minds a little. Think, once in a while. This movie is not that hard to figure out.
