The Pop Star: Burst onto the music scene in 2005 with debut album Music Of The Sun. She hit the big time on our shores with ‘Umbrella’ in 2007. The song was originally penned for Britney Spears, who decided against it (this was around the time she attacked a car with a brollie, after all).
According to Wikipedia, Rihanna has a mezzo-soprano vocal range, which means she’s able to navigate three octaves with no problem.
The Movie Star: After appearing as herself in 2006 cheerleading sequel Bring It On: All Or Nothing, Rihanna made her acting debut this year with Peter Berg’s so-daft-it’s-almost-good Battleship. She plays Petty Officer Cora Raikes, and gets to say “boom” a lot.
Stick To The Day Job? Alright, so Battleship wasn’t exactly earth-shattering (though, hell, it really tried). But Rihanna came away from Berg’s movie with fewer ego-bruises than the likes of Taylor Kitsch. There’s potential there, then – her acting future will no doubt depend on her next movie.

Rihanna has chosen quite an odd film to give her career as an actress a kick start. Battleship is already a joke to most people; while there is a chance it may defy expectations and be an incredible movie, that would be a miracle. Perhaps Rihanna sees a connection to the board game that no one else is. The film makes no attempt to hide its insanity. She should certainly get a second chance at stardom despite this film. http://www.videodetective.com/movies/battleship/413886

I don't think Whitney Houston will be sticking to her day job anytime soon.

Bieber was great in CSI, I loved the part where he got shot. If only it was a documentary.

For me, there is a big difference in "trying be a actor/actress" and MOVIE STAR. Rihanna, Justin Bibier and Britney Spears are much away from the second term. They shouldn't be on this list.

Is it just me or do Total Film have a major chubby for anyone who was a pop star (particularly female) and attempted to make films. Bowie is the only one other than Debbie Harry that made an impact on film, and to say Battleship was "so bad it is almost good" what the f?

Justin Timberlake was undoubtedly the best thing about The Social Network. Cool, scary, intimidating and pathetic all at once, it was a great performance.

I dont know if Eminem qualifies as a pop star, same goes for Frank Sinatra, Kris Kristofferson, Tom Waits etc. Reckon this list has a limited range, much like the authors record collection I presume. Should have included Elvis, one of the first, if not the first pop star to actor.

Good list, but wrong title for it. Should have been "Pop Stars That Tried to Become Movie Stars". Only Will Smith, Marky Mark, Cher, Whitney Houston, and (maybe) LL Cool J on the list have made it to "star" status. Vanity projects like Britney Spears' and Mariah Carey's don't count. The Village People once have a movie made as a film vehicle for them as well. Nobody's ever called them "movie stars".
