13. Beach Starlet Scandal (1954)
What happened? Starlets have always lounged on the beachfront, but Simone Sylva took her canny self-promotion one step further during a photoshoot with Robert Mitchum and gave the cameras a proper eyeful.
Why it’s great: Looking past the obvious reasons – wait, you’re still looking at them. Ready? Right – beyond the pap-frenzy Simone created, she also set a trend for flashing skin and dressing for attention which is still very much a part of the glitzy Cannes parade.
12. Marceau So Embarrassing (2005)
What happened? Sophie Marceau’s dress slipped off her shoulder during a red carpet walk - to the delight of the world’s press.
Why it’s great: A rather different flash of flesh to the usual beach-side posing, the interesting thing about Marceau’s wardrobe malfunction – which earned her intense if creepy coverage – is the suggestion it may have been deliberate. Check out the rolling shoulder before the big reveal.
