What happened? The Prince and Princess of Wales make a royal visit to the festival.
Why it’s great: With hindsight, the pair’s trip to Cannes could be seen as the first sign that the doomed marriage wasn’t working. The festival, it was hoped, would bring the pair closer together, but they both spent their time in Cannes looking distant and uninterested, especially with each other.
6. Madonna Dares To Bare (1991)
What happened?: Promoting her saucy tour-doc Truth Or Dare, Madonna peeled off a robe to reveal a deadly Jean Paul Gaultier number.
Why it’s great: Because in 1991 Madonna still looked like someone you’d want to peel off a robe to reveal a deadly Jean Paul Gaultier number, and because this is exactly the sort of camera-snapping, flesh-baring spectacle that Cannes has come to be synonymous with.
