5. Bardot On The Beach (1953)
What happened?: The unknown Bridgitte Bardot visits Cannes for the first time as a 19 year-old, and poses on the beach.
Why it’s great: It was a watershed moment for Bardot, who went on to become one of the most iconic stars in cinema following the attention she received at the festival. The shots are classic Cannes – beautiful people, in bikinis, on the beach – and have been repeated with newer stars every year since.

4. Benigni Kisses Scorsese’s Shoes (1998)
What Happened? Italian director Roberto Benigni is so overcome after winning an award for Life Is Beautiful that he kisses the shoes of jury leader Martin Scorsese
Why it’s great: Like a sort of dry run for Benigni’s better-known Oscar freak-out, the moment shows the continental air of spontaneity which sets Cannes apart from the flawlessly stage-managed Oscars. What makes it even more astonishing is that Benigni had only won the Grand Prize, the festival’s number two award.
