The Documentary: Dziga Vertov picks up a camera and decides to shoot the place that he calls home – Odessa. Though he went about it with severe solemnity, his film contains flashes of keen humour.
The Cool: Does what it says on the tin, though that straightforward (near dull) title hides the fact that this is a dazzling inventive ride. Vertov finds fascinating ways of shooting his surroundings, busting up against the limits of cinema to forge something that remains breathtaking to this day.
Strange But True: Vertov is actually a pseudonym, meaning ‘spinning top’. Dziga’s real name was David Kaufman.
