I would have went for the scene in Alien with the air ducts, the flamethrower and the steadily quickening beeping as the most tense scene. It's a perfect example of building tension. The beeps are like a quickening heartbeat, the voices of the rest of the crew get more and more nervous. A scene that starts out pretty ho hum ends in pure panic, terror and with the death of the ships captain.

What an outrageously contemporary list! No mention of a single Hitchcock (who is surely the master of cinematic tension) film. What about Spielberg's Duel? And just one of the set pieces from The Wages of Fear are more tense than this whole list put together. Shameful, basically.

we do give you guys a lot of s**t with these lists cos they inevitably won't cover all the best and sometimes miss top choices, but still kudos on working on such cool ideas for lists in the first place. great cos they just get us thinking about all these great movies again. maybe you should do follow up lists with suggestions by readers. this will encourage more talkback and chatter in general :-) personal top choices not here: - Lila Crane heading to the house and then the basement near the end of Psycho. - Inglorious Basterds opening scene - Rear Window final 10 minutes - Blair Witch final 10 minutes - The Thing blood test scene - my number one choice DRUG HEIST IN BOOGIE NIGHTS!

The pool room scene in, 'Carlito's Way' will teach you everything you've ever wanted to know about building up tension and suspense. It's a masterclass.

Great inclusion with Back to the Future, no matter how many times you see it it's still as tense.. The last 25 minutes of Carlito's Way is incredibly tense.. from meeting Dave in the hospital to the whole station conclusion.. excellent movie.. I'd argue it's Pacino's best.. definitely De Palmas greatest film

Great suggestions all, keep 'em coming! I very almost chucked Toy Story 3's incinerator scene in there as well, but it got trumped by the inimitable Paddy Considine.

Jurassic Park and Inglorious Basterds are really good ones... I'm so invested in Batman that Dark Knight was my first thought. The drums of oil, overly-serious convict and the jittery man, Rachel falls and in a couple of scenes Joker fires at the Mayor, the final coin flips. All exhilarating, all of which will catch you of guard when you watch it again. And would Joker smash a thugs head into a pencil? WHO KNOWS?! I have such interest in this because it's all leading up to Dark Knight Rises, and Nolan is not a man who disappoints. Ok, on the other topic, Inception's ending. I am 100% on my view of what the truth is, but YOU JUST CAN'T STAND IT.

No Country For Old Men, some terrifically tense scenes in there, namely at the gas station and the many cat-and-mouse moments later on.

The first 10-15m of "Inglourious" thrashes the hell out of some of these. I should know, I've seen most of this list...

My problem with the opening of Inglourious Basterds is that my stupid brother pretty much spoiled how the scene ended for me. It doesn't have that much tension once you know where it's going, unlike the end in Se7en. I don't know, maybe it's just me? Also, I think "Pretty Women" from Sweeney Todd could qualify for this list.

This could easily be the Tarantino memorial list, so I find it shocking that not one of his films is included. There's the mexican standoff at the end of Reservoir Dogs, the adrenaline shot to the heart scene in Pulp Fiction, the John Travolta vs. Bruce Willis moment in Pulp Fiction, the mexican standoff at the end of Pulp Fiction, the scene when Sam Jackson pays a visit to Pam Grier's apartment in Jackie Brown, the final scene between Grier & Jackson at the end of Jackie Brown, the moment O'Ren steps out into the hallway in Kill Bill Vol. 1, the scene when Thurman shows up at Bud's trailer in Vol. 2, the final fight between Bill & the Bride, the second before Stunt Man Mike drives head on into the car with the girls in Death Proof, the last 20 minutes of Death Proof, the opening scene in Inglourious Basterds, the moment before Donny emerges from the cave in Inglourious Basterds, the tavern sequence in Inglourious Basterds, the lunch scene between Soshana & Joseph Goebbels in Inglourious Basters, and finally the moment before Aldo Raine carves a swastika in Hans Landa's forehead.

Joker16 is right! Well, at the very least, for the scene with Bruce Willis and John Travolta. Pretty much the whole Golden Watch segment was pretty tense, but especially him walking into the apartment. Was I the only one who jumped when the Pop-tarts popped up? And the Mexican standoff in both Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction counted, but I don't know about the adrenaline shot scene. That was more played for laughs than it was for drama, don't you think?

Yes, Jules's and Ringo's stand off, Pulp Fiction. There's nothing like a fake and entirely threatening faux-bible verse to get the juices going.
