Isn't it more the case that in most of these examples they are not being typecast they are simply performing to their range? They are always the same in everything because that's all they've got

Surely Tom Cruise's most against-type roles are Frank TJ Mackey and Les Grossman, who are both totally insane arseholes. Alright, given that Cruise has revealed himself to be a totally insane arsehole you could argue it's not really acting and more just turning up on set, but still... I'd also like to point out that they are by far his best two roles and he really should've won an Oscar for Magnolia.

How is a Alec Baldwin a "snarling a*****e" in The Hunt for Red October? And what's the point of including Cary Grant, Donald Pleasance and Heath Ledger in "Stuck in a rut" list when they're all dead?

I'm surprised that Adam Sandler didn't make this list.

I think Vince Vaughn put in a good, against-type, performance in Jurassic Park 2.

Reasonable list BUT neither Heath Ledger or Gary Oldman should be on there - Oldman is a different character in every film: Sid & Nancy, Batman, Harry Potter, True Romance etc etc & Heath as well, compare: The Dark Knight, 10 Things I Hate About You, Monster's Ball, Lords of Dogtown, Brokeback Mountain etc etc!!! Adam Sandler should be at the top of this list - I struggle to recall a film in which he didn't play... well; himself!

Totally disagree about Gary Oldman. He is a character actor who can basically play anyone. His career has been extremely varied. Adam Sandler on the other hand almost always plays the same person (himself maybe)? Although i've heard he's good in Punch Drunk Love.
