The Soundtrack: Satirising cock rock as it does, Spinal Tap needed rocking tunes to back up all the nod-wink spoofery – and boy does it have them. Hilarious and catchy in equal measure.
Best Song: ‘Big Bottom’, of course.

The Blues Brothers is behind Slumdog Millionaire on this list. Seriously? Aside from Jai ho and the general bollywood aesthetic there wasn't anything that memorable about the soundtrack to that movie at all. Don't get why this film is so high on the list at all. Also, no Watchmen? The soundtrack was one of the best things about the whole movie. Simon and Garfunkel's Sound of Silence in the funeral scene gives me chills every time, let alone to rest of the soundtrack. Bad omission there.

The Adventureland OST has some absolute gems and is a great compilation of 80s rock music with the likes of The Cure, Crowded House, The Replacements, The Velvet Underground and Big Star all featuring. The movie is definitely worth checking out too, I feel that it's massively underrated. Jesse Eisenberg is excellent in it!

I know it's just me, but I've always used the word 'soundtrack' for a collection of songs compiled for a film. As such, this is a great list. But I've alway used the term 'film score' for music composed for a film. To drop some 'film scores' into this list, leaves it missing loads of cool stuff. It also leaves me sounding like a right nerd.

@Sandrine, these aren't in any particular order, just a collection of our favourites. @rover7, great call on Adventureland, love me a bit of Crowded House.

Forgive me, but the version of "Mad World" on the "Donnie Darko" soundtrack was not the Tears For Fears original but a cover by Gary Jules & Michael Andrews; am I right?

@JohnnyMac Haha thankyou :) I remember being very happy when that cover got to #1 in '03, although it was another 2.5 years before I actually saw "...Darko".

How in god's green earth is 'The Harder They Come' not in the list. Ever track is a classic from "You Can Get It If You Really Want" to "Rivers of Babylon". You're all fools I tell you for leaving this out.

The Lost Boys? and erm.... Top Gun. They were the two soundtracks that everyone owned in the 80's and 90's even though not everyone had seen the films. Point Break has a pretty good soundtrack as well

Further to my rant about 'The Harder They Come' not being in the list here are my 'coolest' soundtracks: The Harder They Come Dumb & Dumber The Big Lebowski Casino Boogie Nights All of which seem to have missed your list

Yes Donnie Darko, no to the song Mad World. Better was Blue Moon or even Head Over Heels. Both far FAR better songs of the period than Mad World, especially that awful cover.

A pure jem of a soundtrack is Larry Clarks 'Kids', every track is amazing, on another note the only good thing with Tron:Legacy was the soundtrack...the film was dump!

James Horner's Aliens score should be on here. If Star Wars is then Raiders should be too, for the truck chase alone. Should be 30 cool soundtracks not coolest.

My (sort of) mistake. It says cool on the main TF page then coolest when you start reading it.

Mean Streets? Clearly the Best Movie Soundtrack ever, why is it not on the list? MADNESS! I agree Adventureland should be on there. Wong kar-wai is fantastic at sourcing great and obscure music for his films. 2046 is a classic but I have a soft spot for the strange urban stuff in Fallen Angels. And where's the intense yet slick music from Michael Mann's Manhunter?
