The Comedian: Make-up-and-heels-wearing stand-up comedian who’s known for his rambling (but hilarious) stream-of-consciousness monologues and penchant for pantomime.
The Actor: Izzard graduated from the stage to films with The Secret Agent and The Cat’s Meow before going on to acclaim in Shadow Of The Vampire, Ocean’s Twelve and Valkyrie.
Dramatic Chops? He’s definitely got them, shrugging off his image as a comedian for some decent dramatic roles.

You've mentioned Stephen Fry but not Golden Globe winning Hugh Laurie, Dan Akroyd but not Oscar nominated Bill Murray and Mel Brooks but not 3 time Oscar winning Woody Allen? You've wasted spaces on the likes of Russell Brand, Alan Davies and Tom Arnold instead of mentioning the likes of Robin Williams, Will Smith, Jim Carrey, Eddie Murphy, Whoopi Goldberg, Richard Pryor, Petter Sellers, Dudley Moore... The list goes on! Weak, very weak.

For anyone who has seen Matt Lucas as Thernardier in Les Mis in the west end this summer will certainly agree that Mr Lucas makes a very good turn as the both comedic and very sinister and dark barman.

But how a reputable magazine like Total Film can run a feature like this WITHOUT Robin Williams who actually won an Academy Award for a very straight and dramatic role is beyond me! Bad form, guys!

'Funny guy Wilson is best known as the real star of the US version of The Office, playing an eccentric intern at a funeral home.' Don't mean to be a prick, but Rainn Wilson played an eccentric intern at a Funeral home in Six Feet Under, not The U.S Office. Just saying

Don't mean to be a dick, maybe it's just worded badly, but 'Like many of the best American comedians, Aykroyd got his break with Saturday Night Live'. Dan Aykroyd is Canadian.

TF, your lists are becoming more inaccurate so it can fit a certain opinion. Sigh, here we go For Comedians trying to do serious films/roles (somthing was what your original intension but lost track) Drop Russell Brand, Matt Lucas, Lee Evans, tina Fey replace with Comedian Examples Adam Sandler - Reign over me Robin Williams - One Hour photo/Insomnia Jerry Lewis - The King of Comedy Bill Murray - Lost in Translation Jim Carrey - The Truman Show/Eternal Sunshne of Spotless MInd Peter Sellers - Being There Then again, a lot of these are not British so prob won't fit with TF policy

No Eric Bana? For shame! 'Chopper', 'Black Hawk Down', 'Munich' and recently 'Hannah' were all decent, we'll just forget 'Hulk' though, glaring absence of capable comedian/actors such as Bill Murray and Robin Williams who are all capable of serious dramatic fare. Comedians acting in comedies seems a bit of a moot point as a feature, Adam Sandler essentially plays Adam Sandler in every film he does, except the one decent performance in that Paul Anderson film.

RICHARD PRYOR!!!!!!!!!! What on earth was that all about.... Comedians turned actors right... so basically stand up to serious actor mode.... Where the f**k is everyone... I mean Eddie Murphy, Bill Murray, George Carlin, Jim Carrey... you coulda just checked the most of the Saturday Night Live alumni and posted them... ok maybe Ben Stiller, Mike Myers, Adam Sandler, Zack Galifanikas, Will Ferrell have not done too many serious roles, but maybe I'm missing the point here... More you missed for some reason, Sacha Baron Cohen, Ricky Gervais, Simon Pegg.....Oh and Eric Bana should have definitely been there... really poor list... Explain yourself Winning....
