The Movie: Takashi Miike goes six better than Seven Samurai. Impressively restrained by his standards, but still the year's best film to feature a burning cow.
Impact: A notable change of gears for the usually unpredictable Miike, as he's followed this with another old-school samurai movie, his remake of 1960s classic Harakiri.

Glad to see 'Warrior' as the main picture for this feature, disgracefully neglected film. Was fantastic!

This was such a great movie. I watched it at http://b4releasemovies.com
Dec 12th 2011, 16:34
Fair play for putting Animal Kingdom so high, always thought it was under-rated. Bit weird how half of these originally got mediocre to bad reviews first time round, though
Dec 12th 2011, 17:22
It's not been a bad year for films, gems like Drive, Hannah, Submarine, Animal Kingdom, Super 8 (guilty pleasure) and Snowtown, but in the same breath their has been some right c**p like Thor, Transformers 3, and Attack the Block (which I really wanted to be great but was just flat)
Dec 12th 2011, 17:55
What are the odds CrazyFilmGuy is a teen? Beastly? Three Musketeers? Transformers? Season of the Witch? Green Lantern? I am Number 4? Really???
I liked films like that when I was 15 as well, but for an adult that list is pretty poor.
Dec 12th 2011, 18:16
HA CrazyFilmGuy your list is terrible.
Dec 12th 2011, 18:57
Whoa! Easy there fella. I have to be honest; I agree with MrScary - that list does kinda sound like a kid wrote it. Your reply didn't really prove much else either. Red State and Hobo with a Shotgun - hmmm... growns ups like them *too*? Grown ups who also liked Real Steel, maybe.
Anyway, each to their own. Nothing wrong with a 29 year old watching kids films I suppose. As long as he's on his own.

Dec 12th 2011, 20:45
Sad to say, I haven't seen about half of the movies on this list, but I plan on seeing most of them. Except for "The Tree of Life."
Dec 12th 2011, 21:47
Why in the "hot cast" for X-Men First Class only Fassbender and Lawrence are mentioned? How about James McAvoy? It's shocking how one of the greatest young British actors is ignored by British magazines.
Dec 12th 2011, 22:26
Allow me to take the moral highground here and point out that I'm 74 and you are all poo poo heads.
Dec 12th 2011, 22:56
According to Wikipedia, Black Swan came out December 3rd, 2010. There are several movies on this list that seem to me like they came out in 2010.
Dec 12th 2011, 23:49
Really want to see Drive, Warrior, 50/50, Crazy Stupid Love, Contagion and Real Steel
The films ive seen this what i think are the best would be X-Men:First Class, Harry Potter:DHP2, Thor, Captain America, Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes, Attack The Block, Tangled, The Fighter, The Kings Speech, Limitless, The Hangover Part 2 (i thought it was great and funny don't care what anyone says), Souce Code, Transformers:DOM (ive always likes the films and the action scenes were as great as always), Black Swan (i'm sure it was out in 2010 though?), 127 hours and Johnny English Reborn.
Most overrated was Bridesmaids not because it was a bad film because it wasn't it was just KW character was selfish, annoying and a complete b*tch to he best mate and apart from the plane scene most of the comedy was just bland and not as funny as it should been. Saying that ive got on Blu-Ray because it got it cheap. Worst film ive seen this year is Green Lantern because of rubbish action scenes, rubbish plot and bad acting from everyone other then Mark strong.
Dec 13th 2011, 2:43
Really pleased to see the Contagion got a mention. Don't know if its just me but thought the film kinda slipped by to quietly, even more so when you look at the cast it had (4 Oscar winners). Espcially loving see the talented Jennifer Ehle popping up in it, hadn't personally seen her in anything since her role as Miss Elixabeth Bennet in the BBC's production of Pride And Prejudice way back in 1995, and there she is appearing in 2 films that have made it into this lists tops 50 films, even more shocking to me was that shes actually American I always thought she was British.
ps.....loving the "Bonus points for casting Gwyneth Paltrow as the monkey" bit, made me chuckle.
Dec 13th 2011, 2:49
Drive seems to be the movie getting the most love from magazines/sites I read.
Dec 13th 2011, 8:10
Uhmmm, where's Hobo with a Shotgun ?
Dec 13th 2011, 8:54
This is one of those glitch things Trinity was talking about
Dec 13th 2011, 10:37
Insidious is still my favourite film this year. The most enjoyable US horror in a long time.
Dec 13th 2011, 11:33
My favourite from what I have seen is Warrior without a shadow of a doubt. but there quite a few on here I haven't seen so looking forward to them :-)
Dec 14th 2011, 1:08
Except Sherlock Holmes isnt released until Friday...
Dec 14th 2011, 10:40
Okay fair play :) I can't wait to see it!
Dec 14th 2011, 19:37
i dont think i could name all 50/50 is up there as one of my most fave i loved it sooo much, some of my other favourites are:

im sure ive forgotten some more films grrrr....
Dec 15th 2011, 19:22
Not a bad list but how do you explain the absence of BIUTIFUL?
Dec 17th 2011, 14:48
It appears I've been slacking this year, only seen ten of that top fifty. Luckily, it seems, I've seen even less of TheFilmMaster's list (4). My personal favourite has probably been Black Swan from those I've seen.
Jan 31st 2012, 15:19
Well this is obviously a list of jumbled Ryan Gosseling movies that some latent homosexual masturbates to nightly. Which half-retarted editor would allow this list?
Mar 7th 2012, 0:10
There are many films I have seen and a lot more, I have not had the chance to see yet which is even more exciting since I will be seeing some great films. I really enjoyed Drive and I am getting the feeling that people either loved it or hated it with a passion. I also enjoyed Hannah it had a special charm that sucked me in quite easily. Dish has me traveling a lot for work this year so I will be enjoying my favorite pastime from my laptop it appears. Luckily, I did investigate and decide to go fro the Blockbuster@ Home service so I can live stream movies while I'm on the road. Some folks are a little bit luckier watching movies by mail on their giant HDTV's or playing games but with my sling adapter connecting to my DVR and internet I will still be enjoying my favorite passion. I am watching "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" tonight and I'm excited, I have wanted to see this film for a while.
Apr 6th 2012, 6:59
Really? Tree of Life second best movie? I like a weird movie as much as the next nerd, but this was way over the top and it managed to make strange boring. I think it's one of the worst movies I've seen, even if the visuals were "interesting" and the music was done by a genius. I fell asleep. Boring, bad, confusing, unnecessarily long... I know critics just LOVE to say movies like this are classics and so on, but I'm pretty certain it will be soon forgotten except by the weirdest cinema buffs.
Apr 6th 2012, 7:01
BTW, The King of Cinema on this page has the WORST taste in movies, and is evidently VERY young.
Apr 28th 2012, 14:08
I love Super 8.
All in all it's an awesome list
I seriously love Warrior by the way :)
Apr 28th 2012, 16:05
This list is pretty good, other than Harry Potter being a bit high! Can't disagree with the no. 1 though. Drive was brilliant.
May 9th 2012, 16:15
watch all 50 movies here
May 10th 2012, 18:23
How is Shame not on this list. The most overlooked film of the year, and one of the best. Also, Warrior, pfffft. Most overrated pos I watched this year.
Jun 5th 2012, 23:52
like Leonard responded I can't believe that any body can make $7596 in four weeks on the internet. have you seen this web site ======>>> lazycash1.com
Aug 25th 2012, 1:53
Why in god's name did The Fighter beat Warrior, and why wasn't Warrior in the top 10 or top 5??? Everyone on the internet and elsewhere agrees Warrior is one of the finest films made in the last 10 years.
Aug 25th 2012, 14:09
Thor is the worst film I've ever seen. Essentially plotless, pointless drivel. Awful choice for a 'Top 50'.
Aug 25th 2012, 21:09
pretty good list, warrior is one of my favs! here is my top ten http://www.infobarrel.com/Best_Films_of_2011
Aug 27th 2012, 1:44
Hmm... my best for 2011 was probably Attack The Block or Submarine.
Aug 29th 2012, 10:11
Let's have a look at this page: http://ping.it/MarcusYoung/Top-10-movies-now-playing There's a lot of movie buffs on Ping.it and they made this great topic with current releases.
Aug 31st 2012, 19:46
I have joined this web page for the sole reason of discrediting the "number 1" movie of 2011.
I don't know how anyone could have have watched such a dull, uneventful piece of trash and found it anything but the WORST movie ever made and I include the cinematic "treat" spy kids 2.
Please please PLEASE for the love of God, do not waste any of your life trying to watch if you haven't already done so.
Simon Kinnear, you are a d****e! Stop writing blogs about movies as you seem to have no idea what makes a movie watchable.
I am actually angry as you are wasting peoples lives with your delusions!
Sep 1st 2012, 16:10
The list is in a bit of a mess isn't it?
Sep 4th 2012, 23:02
I really enjoyed the list with some movies thrown in that I had not heard of...not really sure why you would put Drive as your #1 considering its a love it or hate it movie.
Sep 14th 2012, 23:18
i was saw a mafia film described on one of these lists a few months ago i though it was this one? i am pritty sure it was italian it had thugs in tracksuits in the picture if i remember right and was described as showing them in their real light of violent thugs, i'm pretty sure it was out in the last few years,
has anyone got any idea which film i am on about.
Oct 2nd 2012, 4:31
most of these movies suck
Oct 17th 2012, 0:10
@jhamarwalters your obviously just a troll because most of these films are great, you must have horrible judging skills or at least on film. What films would you suggest? Since you obviously know what was better, please dont just take the easy way out and not answer cause you cant make a comment like that unless you have something logical to back it up.
Oct 17th 2012, 0:16
To the writer, i know this was written before The Girl with Dragon Tattoo cam out but list needs to be redone and that movie needs to be at the top of the list. The cinematography, acting, script, pace, camera shots, and everything else was near perfect and knowing David Fincher we kinda already knew it should be higher than 50 even before it came out.
Oh and @jhamarwalters i was going to delete my comment cause i kinda understand what you mean, i should have put SOME of these movies are great lol. Thats my bad but SOME of these movies need to be here but agree that they need to bi higher on the list and then some just not here at all. Really though what were some of your favorite movies that should be here?
Oct 17th 2012, 0:45
Or Black Swan needs to be first that movie is perfect as in artistic value, the movie just conquers that is on this list, maybe not Tree of Life in that field but im more of a Darren fan myself and hes my favorite director.
Nov 20th 2012, 18:55
Perhaps you need to TT: Closer to the Edge again. Then you can revise this list.
Dec 24th 2012, 17:39
list is great! but what a lame intro for each movie!
Dec 24th 2012, 17:56
WTF!!!!!!!! i really mean it WWWWWTTTTTTTFFFFFFFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
"drive" on number 1! i have watched this movie.. nothing but a boring s**t.. no action.. no car action.. just hype..! whts wrong with u? tel me? :P
Dec 27th 2012, 8:31
Could not agree more. Drive is a terrible movie. I really hated watching it. I have no clue what all the hype is all about.
Jan 30th 2013, 13:59
My friend categorizes "Drive" as an art-house film.
It can really get polarizing with these type of movies when it comes to the audiences' reaction or reviews.
i.e. you either hate or love it. There will be almost no one in between.
In my case, well, I loved it. In fact it's my favorite movie of '11.
I find myself comparing Drive with The Girl With The Dragon Tatoo as both have a very distinct style to them along with amazing cinematography and camera shots.
Feb 12th 2013, 12:12
This list of best movies is b******t... there is not a single movie NOT EVEN ONE movie in this list worth watching. b******t.
Mar 12th 2013, 3:47
