    cue lots of "How could forget...?" (*cough *Dr Strangelove, Lawrence of Arabia) Personallly i think The Thin Red Line is overrated, I'm quite sure soldiers didnt sit around looking at butterflies while their comrades were being blown to bits. Does Return of the King count as a war movie? I've always wondered, theres a little war in it.

    Apocalypse Now is easily better than Platoon, so is Full Metal Jacket... and Hamburger Hill. In fact, Platoon as a 'war movie' is pretty pants. As a Hollywood, entertaining DafoeBerengerSheenfest, it's pretty funny/enjoyable.

    Wow, bad list. There are a lot of war films better than 'Apocalypse Now', 'The Deer Hunter', 'The Thin Red Line' and 'Casablanca' for example should be higher than it as they are much better. 'Saving Private Ryan' is an awful film that doesn't even deserve a place on this list. In my opinion the greatest war film ever made is without a doubt 'All Quiet On The Western Front' which should be number 1 on this list.

    I think Schindler's List is the best war film ever made. But, anyone who has seen the film surely knows the 'Grab the Tissues' moment is the very end of the film. Like many on here, I find The Thin Red Line good, but overrated. I also think Apocalypse Now is overrated too. I would like to know why 'Where Eagles Dare' isn't on the list? That has to be one of the most outright enjoyable war films ever made. I'm surprised I'm the first to mention it - from what I have seen.

    I know it's a silly one, but 'The Wild Geese' gets on my list for the Burton, Harris, Moore, Kruger mash up, and why couldn't Richard Harris run that bit quicker at the end, every time I watch that bloody film I'm still hoping that he jumps on that plane!

    What about Glory with Matthew Broderick, Morgan Freeman and Denzel Washington? Grab the tissues when the redneck says "give them Hell, 54!" as they go to certaing death to storm the fort at the end of the film. And how about Too Late the Hero with Michael Caine and Cliff Robertson? And since MASH is here, how about Abbott and Costello in Buck Privates??? Relax, I'm kidding. However, I'm totally serious about Laurel and Hardy in Beau Hunks when they join the French Foreign Legion. ;)

    People mentioning Strangelove, I thought it should be there too at first, but it isn't really a war film in the same way the rest on this list are - it doesn't take place during a war, but war is certainly a major theme in the film... Oh well, 2 other Kubricks in the top 10 so I'm happy :)

    The Thin Red Line better than Full Metal Jacket? Wrong. I fell asleep during Thin Red Line and I can watch FMJ over and over. A The Good, The bad, and The Ugly? If you're going to "stretch" like that, what about Star Wars? I mean..it does have "Wars" in the title, it is about a war, and is one of the biggest films of all time. And what about Au Revoir Les Enfants?

    The Thin Red Line is not only one of the top three greatest war films ever made it is in the top ten greatest films ever made, it is not intended as just a war film it is a poetic journey detailing the plight of mankind, the madness of war and the truth to existence, read some more before judgeing Malick's work. Agree with earlier comments about Saving Private Ryan, overrated toss, three stars at best and is not even a true story by the way. Apocalypse Now, The Deer Hunter and Das Boot are fantastic as is Casualties of War. Schindler's list was overrated and not even a war film it is a drama as is The Pianist. Red Cliff is excellent and I liked Kingdom of Heaven for it's intentions, to show that religions which are almost the same should love and understand each other, and I especially liked the way Saladin was portrayed as a patient humanist unlike the Christians in history who murdered everyone.

    These types of lists are never going to be as every individual would want them but if we're having the good the bad and the ugly there has to be a place for gladiator and in any event there has to be a place for a bridge too far!

    Full Metal Jacket should be number 2 or 3(as should The Deer Hunter.) And Three Kings is better than a Tarantino film easily. And Dead Presidents could have easily made this list due to the fact it dealt with black Vietnam vets who had it even worse than white vets who were also lost and broke. Also I may have missed it, but doesn't Glory deserve a spot? Not the biggest fan of the film but most people consider it pretty awesome. And Platoon is a joke compared to the serious war films... just like Saving Private Ryan with it's comic book plot with cartoon character bad guy Nazis.

    how can you have the 50 greatest war films and have saving private ryan, which only the opening 20 mins are accurate and not have Memphis belle one of only a few bombs to make it to 25 missions . Bloody thursty american s**t isn't a match for historical accuracy

    Defiance is a pretty modern film (daniel craig) should be in the top 10 if you ask me, its a brilliant story about the jews in hiding from the germans. if you havnt seen it you need to have a look!
