Superman could be considered a bit of a loner, more so than Batman really. Nobody knows his true identity and he lives at the North Pole. Every other surviving member of his race, with the exception of Super-Girl, seems determined to kill him, Admittedly if you count Justice League he has some mates, but Batman is also a member of them.

Batman has friends other than John Blake and Selina Kyle throughout The Dark Knight Trilogy: Alfred Pennyworth, Rachel Dawes, Jim Gordon, Lucius Fox, and arguably Ducard and Harvey Dent.

I wouldn't really describe some of these as 'cool', but loners, yes. Some other great loners i'd add are: Robert Ford (the coward), Gilderoy from Berberian Sound Studio, Chopper Read, Lisbeth Salander, Jackie Cogan, Lola from The Loved Ones, Tonny from Pusher 2, Mark Zuckerberg, Oliver Tate from Submarine, Rorschach, and Randy 'The Ram' from The Wrestler.

Luke from Cool Hand Luke? I would still call him a loner even though he does form a bond with Dragline and some of the guys in prison...and I agree completely with Henryjr with Lisbeth Salander, she's the epitome of a badass loner.

The ultimate loner to arguably rival even "the Man with no Name" - by the way, where's Toshiro Mifune's Sanjuro (Yojimbo/Sanjuro) on whom Eastwoods's bounty hunter was so obviously based on? - is unfortunately missing from the list: Jef Costello (played by Alain Delon) from Le Samurai.

Wow, very well balanced and extensive list. Plenty of fan favorites. I love the nods to Coen creeps Edward Crane and Anton Chigurh just as much as those to Wall-E and Wolverine. You do not discriminate. I love TotalFilm.

Surely you realize Booker in Expendables is NOT a loner? This is not even his first movie.....

Sometimes on this site you try to hard to make the lists LONG. A bunch of these weren't loners, they were just ALONE. There is a huge difference. And really, a lot of us pictured Snake Pliskin just from the title of the article. Not just for the list, but right up close to the top. And I have to wonder how old the author is? You have Will Smith from "I am Legend," without seeming to realize he's not the first or even the best version of this character........and you you don't seem to know that James Bond was married once.

davemelges - which ones were just alone as opposed to loners? I'm genuinely interested, I can see a couple but not "a bunch"
