Some of these (actually quite a few) are hardly ensemble casts.. they are just... the cast.

Right Total Film. This news may make you nervous, it may be a bit scary, and I can understand why you all might hide under the table when I say it... But, whisper now, it is possible to make a list without shoehorning The Dark Knight in. 50 Movies based on episodes of My Little Pony? You'd shoehorn the Dark Knight in. 1000 movies that Christopher Nolan and Christian Bale had absolutely nothing to do with? You'd shoehorn The Dark Knight in....

Glengarry glen ross and the disaster films are good calls. Dark knight, if you read the cast list, has to be on there, in my opinion. When else have you ever seen a cast like that? Why no Alien and Aliens? OK, anumber of people weren't that famous but, as an ensemble, they were awesome. In that case I would consider Predator and The Thing (1982). Prometheus would be worth a shout with its cast. How about Galaxy Quest? Tropic Thunder (c**p fim, great cast - and I know that it just remade Galaxy Quest, but that just remade Three Amigos, so there). If we are just looking at fame, how about Cannonball run? P.S. Jurassic Park?!! The film is enjoyed because of the special effects and storytelling (although it forgets to have an actual ending - so maybe set pieces rather than storytelling). The cast? Laura ("women inherit the earth") Dern and Jeff ('comic relief') Goldblum are very annoying (Jeff especially), Sam Neill was solid but uninspiring, Bob Peck is only remembered in it for the bit where the raptors get him and Sam Jackson is basically an extra. Despite liking the film, I actually struggle to pick anyone that was really good in it.

I know it's British and all, but Love Actually should have been here. In the end, the title is not 50 Greatest American Ensemble Casts. Colin Firth, Bill Nighy, Alan Rickman, Emma Thompson, Hugh Grant, Liam Neeson, Keira Knightley, Rowan Atkinson, Billy Bob Thornton, Claudia Schiffer, Denise Richards, Elisha Cuthbert.

I hate to say it but Joel Schumacher's Batman films both had a pretty decent cast, miscasted yes, but A-listed nonetheless.

I think there are some good films here but I would definitely have included Nashville (one of the greatest films ever and strangely missing from the list given you have included other Altman films), Network, a Merchant Ivory film like Howards End or A Room With A View (what incredible British talent!!), Dr Strangelove, and... the Godfather??? One almost feels like the person who wrote this article just perused the wikipedia list of ensemble films and chose 50 at random..... And I have to say I think the Dark Knight is a good movie but it does not belong on every list!!!

Respect to Total Film for not going with the obvious Alec Baldwin in Glengarry Glen Ross and instead giving the stand out to Jack Lemmon. One of the greatest performances ever from one of the greatest actors ever. Quietly devesatating. And also respect for including United 93. I don't think most listmakers would even consider that for this category.

You really should stop using the word greatest. Opinion yes, but you clearly don't get enough time to really think about these articles. I wont name any omissions as so many have been named above (OK, The Breakfast Club should be here). Glengarry Glen Ross should surely be top though. If we are judging on cast and not the film as a whole (though it could top both for me as I love it that much) the talent on show is unbelievable. A cast on top form with a script that is outstanding start to finish. Also robbed at the Oscars, 1 nomination (Al Pacino) and nothing for Mamet. Booo!

Some are good choices, some terrible and quite a few NOT ensemble, and to leave out - as others have commented - 'The Great Escape', 'Black Hawk Down' and 'The Breakfast Club' is very remiss. You should also have considered 'The Wild Geese', 'Zulu', 'The Gumball Rally', 'California Suite' and 'Murder By Death' (Peter Sellers, David Niven, Alec Guiness, Maggie Smith, Eileen Brennan, Peter Falk and Truman Capote) what a cast and very funny.

Half the list are not ensemble pieces. I agree that the Breakfast Club needs to be here, especially since it is Hughes' magnum opus as a writer and all of the cast intermingle as a group instead of just in dyads. I am surprised no one mentioned Airplane. I don't think anyone would argue that it isn't one the greatest comedies of all time, and think of the cast (those not named Robert Hays or Julie Haggerty): Lloyd Bridges!, Peter Graves!, Leslie Nielsen!, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Robert Stack!, Barbara Billingsley, and Maureen McGovern, with cameos by Ethel Merman!, Jimmy J.J. Walker (DyyyynoooMite!), Jill Whelan (Capt. Steubings daughter on the Love Boat), David Leisure (the lying guy from those 80's commercials), James Hong! Nerds' "Snotty" among hundreds of other typecast Asian male roles), and Lorna Patterson (TV's Private Benjamin). I could keep going--Love, Actually has already been mentioned, but what about Armageddon? It is a true ensemble piece in that the leads interact as a group for the majority of the film, and it is actually a pretty enjoyable film featuring Willis, Affleck, Buscemi, Wilson, Thornton, Patton, Tyler, Fichtner, and the late Michael Clarke Duncan (R.I.P.). Young Guns is sadly missing, as are the Rat Pack films (and possibly the Clooney-driven Oceans films), Suicide Kings, and Shawshank Redemption. I assume musicals are fair game so it might not be a stretch to put Grease! on the list.

It seems Total Film dosen't know what an ensemble cast is...at all. Having a large cast is not an ensemble cast. Having lots of stars isn't an ensemble cast if one of them is given more screen time than the rest of them. The Dark Knight shouldn't be because it's about Batman. You can have Gary Oldman in it, you can have Michael Caine in it, but they're minor characters screen time wise, ergo, not an ensemble cast.
