Exclusive: The Biblical blockbuster gets a-planning
The new Mr. Fantastic speaks about what drew him to the project
Take a trip to the dark side…
The Antiheroes: A pair of morally bankrupt degenerates who make their way across America, pointing their guns at anyone who crosses their path. But they do love each other, which is sweet…Effortless Cool: Woody Harrelson has never looked cooler than when sporting Mickey’s circular glasses and brandishing a firearm. Not even in Zombieland.

That was a fun list, TF! Love Mad Max, Chev Chelios, Snake, Travis and Big Chris! And Clooney was never cooler than Seth Gecko. Bale as Bateman (not Batman, sorry) is a legend....these yuppies had it coming! Just Damon as Ripley never convinced me....he still looks like Hilary Swank with glasses...And then there's D-Fens...a great character in a very very good movie...one of the best black, dark comedies I've ever seen (besides American Psycho).

great list. could definitely use a couple more female characters. michelle pfeiffer's catwoman and sharon stone as catherine trammel fit the bill. great baddies we can't help but root for.

"A violent rapist shouldn’t be an engaging character.." maybe because hes..erm. A VIOLENT RAPIST.
Dec 16th 2011, 10:29
I'd also add Malik El Djebena from "A Prophet"

Where's the T800 from T2? With Bad To The Bone playing when he leave's that bar at leasts puts him the top 5.
Dec 16th 2011, 17:58
What about Jigsaw? All he wants people to do is live their lives to the fullest and not p**s away their opportunities.
Dec 16th 2011, 18:20
Hey, violent rape apparently counts as a 'sexy scene' on this site so I'm sure a rapist is ok...
Tony Montana should be higher, and there's a sad lack of Jimmy Cagney, Neil from Heat, and Tom Cruise from Collateral imo.

Wait - you put Bickle at no. 1 but not the character he's based on in the list *anywhere*? Nathan from "The Searchers" needs to be included by that reasoning, I'd think. Plus, why no love for any other Asian films apart from "Old Boy"? Chow Yun Fat from either "The Killer" or "Full Contact" would seem to be obvious choices, no? And what about Sonny Chiba? Mifune, especially from "Yojimbo"?

hey wheres Bubba the zombie from day of the dead! that guy was my hero... and is pretty good with a gun lol
definitely agree that the T800 should be on the list

Where the heck is Mark Renton?? D:

It's a shame, though, that - yet again - professional writers show they have no idea what "anti-hero" actually means.

In RPG terms it means Chaotic-Neutral. According to wiki : Chaotic Neutral is called the "Anarchist" or "Free Spirit" alignment. A character of this alignment is an individualist who follows his or her own heart, and generally shirks rules and traditions. Although they promote the ideals of freedom, it is their own freedom that comes first. Good and Evil come second to their need to be free, and the only reliable thing about them is how totally unreliable they are. Chaotic Neutral characters are free-spirited and do not enjoy the unnecessary suffering of others, but if they join a team, it is because that team's goals happen to coincide with their own at the moment. They invariably resent taking orders and can be very selfish in their pursuit of personal goals. A Chaotic Neutral character does not have to be an aimless wanderer; they may have a specific goal in mind, but their methods of achieving that goal are often disorganized, unorthodox, or entirely unpredictable...
Just to repeat: "Chaotic Neutral characters are free-spirited and do not enjoy the unnecessary suffering of others..." So likes of Hannibal Lecter and Alex the droog wouldnt count...ffs, I sound like Sheldon Cooper!

What is with the same people always attacking Total Film and yet they still come here and read all of their features, if you think they do not know what they are talking about sod off. I think alot of you missed the point of "anti hero" or are taking the expression too literally, an anti hero is someone you should not root for but you do, hence the characters in A Clockwork Orange, and De Niro's character in Once Upon a Time in America is a rapist as is Michael Douglas's character in Basic Instinct and you could argue Sharon Stone's. Total Film have a career out of judgeing films you lot sit here waiting for a chance to pretend you know better, evolve.
Oh by the way Luke Skywalker probably had incest fantasies about his sister, James Bond is a complete woman abuser and Abraham Lincoln caused the deaths of hundreds of thousands to satisfy his own political and megalomaniac ambitions but it's ok though he did not rape anyone.

Well one, this is probably my favourite list for a while, but two, this is a discussion board. I like TF because for the most part they have an excellent amount of film news and trivia and the good outweighs the bad. Doesn't change the fact we're massive film geeks and that there has been the occasional bizarre attitude taken to rape by the writers of the site. Although, kudos for the fantastically broad and random mention of Abraham Lincoln.

Maybe he's getting confused. Maybe he meant Abe Froman... The sausage king of Chicago!
Dec 19th 2011, 15:27
I think he means F Murray Abraham. His slaughter of thousands in pursuit of an oscar is frequently swept under the carpet and I won't stand for it any longer!

J.D. from Heathers, Theo from Children of Men, Leslie Vernon from Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon, Freddy from A Nightmare on Elmstreet 1-4, Kazuo Kiriyama from Battle Royale, R.J. MacReady from The Thing, Vince Vaughn from Clay Pigeons, Neil from Heat, Aaron Eckhart from In the Company of Men, Cusack from the Grifters, Tom Atkins in Night of the Creeps, etc...
