"Star Trek" was pretty good, but most loved? And I just can't share all the hype about "Inception" and "Amelie". It's nice to see "Evil Dead 2", "Die Hard", "Ghostbusters". I quite miss "Groundhog Day" here and "Sideways". And one of the ultimate guilty-pleasures: "Commando"! Glad to see "The Big Lebowski" here, even I would rate it much higher. What other movie gets edited (dubbed) for TV so bad it ends up saying: "See what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?"

Yeah, pretty good list. I personally would have added 'The Iron Giant', which reminds me; did I not see 'ET' on that list?

Hi Totalfilm! A brave attempt to list the 50 'most loved' films. A pretty good effort too! Its a really great list but its hard to do such a list without some flims fans feeling slighted coz invariably everyone will have a couple of movies that they feel should have been included. I'm happy coz most of my top ten favourite movies of all times are included here. My own criticism is that this list is obviously from a British perspective. Some 'loved' movies I think you left out for many film fans would be 1) Grease 2) Sound of Music 3) Mary Poppins 4) Lion King 5) Gladiator 6) The Italian Job 7) Lock, Stock and two smoking barrels 8) A Wonderful Life 9) Gone with the Wind 10) Ben Hur 11) ET .... are all I can think of off hand. I'm sure they are many others.......

Great list, and most of the films on here definitely deserve their place (although personally I think Star Trek 2009 should be moved up, it completely restarted my love of Star Trek as a whole, and everything about it was perfect). Lebowski, Inception, Star Wars, Ghostbusters, Lord of the Rings, Dark Knight, Harry Potter, Donnie Darko etc, all amazing. But I'd add one more to the list: Inglourious Basterds. This film knocked Reservoir Dogs off the top spot for 'My favourite Tarantino movie ever'. Brilliantly funny, classic Tarantino film, everyone loves it, but it doesn't get the credit it deserves.

Where are my Lethal weapon' movies, and how can some1 put harry potter before the Godfather and GodfatherII movies give us a break the speech Don Vito delivers afte the death of sonny and brining Mikey back. Ou when dies its like I crried on his death more then I did on My late grandfather. Or the lovely flashbacks showing a young Vito providing for his family, worried about his no 2 son health [Fredo] or Mike holding Fredo in their mum's funiral and giving that torn-apart yet deadly look to his bodyguard it was like sorry brother but you went against the family for the last time. I even like the 3rd part his confission to the pope to be and the cofin it was lovely. As for the Shining i like it like the next fella but the bueaty of the movie was that we dissliked the charecter, hes a crazy man but not in one flew over cocko's nest

Harry potter?? .... p**s off. We are talking most loved? What about ET, Gladiator, the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie, It's a Wonderful Life. If we are basing it on money as in the Hunger Games, how about Avatar?? Lot of people watched that...

Very happy with this list, especially with the inclusion of "Star Trek" at #50. Disagree with "Harry Potter" being #1 - should have switched that with the "LOTR" trilogy instead. Also disagree with "Blade Runner" and "Raiders", although I'm not a massive Harrison Ford fan as is.

Well, you were never going to get this right, with everyone having a different opinion but you did a bloody good job of it! Love that you included The Hunger Games - and don't anyone be put off by the fact that it is portrayed as a teen movie and that it had a record-breaking opening weekend: it is a genuinely brilliant film. You missed out a few (The Lion King, Gone With The Wind etc) and put in some strange ones (Star Trek? Really?) but overall very good. I'd like a few changes, such as The Lord of the Rings and The Hunger Games higher but that is personal preference only. :D

I reckon Back to the future should have been first, its just such a classic tale that has endless appeal. Compare that to the first Potter movie, which goes on for about 5 hours and has a bunch of nauseating middle-class brats pointing sticks at people and things. Also, no Predator? Almost every 20 and 30-something male can quote it word for word. "Here we are again bro, same kinda moon, same kinda jungle..."

Harry Potter??? Really?! Some of them were alright, a lot of them were sh!t. Lord of the Rings will stand the test of time a lot better in my opinion. Goonies and Princess Bride should both be a lot higher, as should Raiders. I don't know anyone who doesn't love that film. Also were is Bugsy Malone?

Great list...right up until the last one. When I saw that Star Wars was number 2 I thought "what? what could possibly have beaten star wars?" HARRY POTTER? You kidding me? I've read and watched everything HP, being of the HP generation, but even I got bored with it by the end (or perhaps I was insanely bored of Radcliffe's wooden acting, can't really tell). Nope, does not deserve the number one spot. Star Wars (episodes 4,5,6- not the prequels) is so, so much better than Harry Potter. And Lord of the Rings is better than EVERYTHING.

I really enjoyed this list, it had everything bar Top Gun, ET (wtf!), The Breakfast Club, Gladiator, The Karate Kid, Gemlins, well ok it didn't have everything, but still a good list AND THEN......Harry F**king Potter at number 1. Actually really annoyed at that choice, they will never ever ever have the same effect on society as Star Wars did. How can any love a hero a dull and boring a HP brown sauce. Harry Potter loved more than Han Solo! The mind boggles. Anyway I suppose it got us all talking and posting which is the aim of these features.

I've just realised that there was no Braveheart, Greece or Home Alone, I thought these were universally loved films. Still, Harry Potter no.1, f**k me.

A fairly pointless list, unless you're an excitable 12 year old boy. Star Trek 2009 but no Wrath of Khan? Seriously? If it weren't for Superman being on the list your subscription would have been in danger. Come on TF, you're better than this!

It is official. This list is completely BOGUS and should be removed from the internet for all eternity for one single omission; E.T. As for Harry Potter and LOTRs, I can't stand them, so they don't belong. Star Trek was okay, but not loved by many other than sci-fi geeks. Horrible, Horrible, list.

Oh, and pretty much all of the Disney and Pixar films of the last 40 years belong on this list over many of them.

No love for The Empire Strikes Back? It took everything great about Star Wars, made it better, and flushed the things that didn't work as well out the airlock!
