    Well, there are quite some turkeys on this list. “Battlefield Earth” – seriously?? Anything with Hubbards name on it doesn’t deserve any support. Then “The Spirit”, “Super Mario Bros” and “Love Guru”. There’s a reason why these didn’t get sequels. “Wing Commander” was crappy as hell. The graphics in the game looked better than the FX in the movie. About “Mystery Men”, “The Saint” and “Sahara”: Wouldn’t mind to see more. But the only disguise that Val Kilmer could put off these days would be as Jabba the Hut. I have to admit I liked “Doom” (mindless fun) and “Tango & Cash”. Would watch these sequels. “Wild Wild West” was ok, but the original TV-series was awesome! “Remo” was decent. I thought Fred Ward was good in it. Underrated actor. “Unbreakable” was great. Some part of me wants to see more. But since they might fück it up, it may be better to leave it alone. I’d also like to see more of “Darkman”. I only count the first movie…for me the sequels never happened. Only Neeson is Darkman.

    I hope they make a sequel to The Losers. That film was ace. Anyway, most of these films are tragically bad and deserve to die in the dustbin of hell.

    Buckaroo Banzai; one of the greatest films of all time...insane, and brilliant! The mythology within the movie is so complex and confusing that it deserved sequels, but maybe the fact that there are none just makes the mvie even more special.

    I have to agree with bandit1, there are some lemons on this list but yes most of these should have gone on. I have always thought Hollywood or some one should make a site or something to have people vote whether or not a movie should get a sequel and so on or even a kick-start kind of thing for movies where you help pay for the movie to be made.

    @ NerdTronJJ - Heh, yup definitely some lemons. I tried to go for a balance between great films that were 'promised' a franchise, but never got one, and uglies that got swept to the side for (some would say) good reason.

    "Sahara" and "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" were also pretty s**t, which didn't help any sequel prospects. Though I quite liked "Prince of Persia..." and "Van Helsing" m'self, and didn't even realise half of the list were intended to be franchise'd. Also, if "Salt 2" is in development, then why is it here? Should wait until it's explicitly stated to have been given up on before including it on things like this.

    Am I missing something here? Were there not two other Punisher movies? If you have ignored them due to them not starring Dolph Lundgren then so be it but then you mention a TV show which is more likely to carry on from the recent productions than a lost movie from the 80's. Also The Love Guru? Really? I think it's time you had a break from making all these lists as you are clearly struggling for ideas and content.

    Erm...aren't the films listed all ones that studios, directors, writers etc thought would/should have sequels rather than Total Film wishing that they should have sequels?!?!?!

    Yes to Master & Commander. Although i can see why some people might not like the film (it's pacing maybe isn't the best), i love it. Would love to have seen Captain Crowe return, maybe in a massive sea battle as part of Lord Nelson's Armada. Good shout with the Golden compass as well. I loved those books and wish they'd at least finished the trilogy. I wonder how large a negative effect the Potter franchise has had on book adaptations in terms of studios expecting phenomenal box office returns. Its rare that franchises like this happen, so surely studios should maybe lower their expectations a little on a first entry in a series? With regards to the Shadow/Rocketeer/Phantom films - they should do an Avengers style series and team them up. They're all set in the same era i believe, although i'm guessing different studios own the properties. Big Trouble - for the love of God yes please! Maybe controversial, but it is my favourite John Carpenter film (yes, The Thing is a beter film, but i just love watching Big Trouble) And finally - have to toally agree on your number one choice. I tried to get a friend to watch Firefly and he didn't like it. I had to sever all ties with him and cut him out of my life.

    A few questionable entries but 100% agree with Serenity at #1 - the whole saga of what happened to Firefly/ Serenity is a travesty and even 10 years on from the first TV appearance it desperately needs to be revived in some form. Now that Whedon is a God and Fillion is a bankable TV star surely a sequal isnt impossable.

    I would pretty much be first in line if 'Buckaroo Banzai Versus the World Crime League'' and the planned sequels to 'Twin Peaks', 'The Goonies' and 'Serenity' were eventually made. Here's an interesting little factoid: apparently the makers of that wacky little mindf**k called 'Forbidden Zone' are planning on making a sequel to their film. That would be interesting to see.

    Id love to see Unbreakable 2. Unbreakable is just such an intelligent movie ,dark and moving, ill always wonder what number might have brought. It remains Shyamalans best!

    "Tonally perfect and a film that took superheroes seriously before Singer came along with X-Men" ... except that X-Men came out August 2000 and Unbreakable was released in December 2000 ... kinda fecked that up didn't ya? Agree that Unbreakable is an absolute gem and M. Night is a liar coz back in 2000/2001 he was reported in many an interview to have a trilogy all planned out ... I have the copies of Total Film and Empire to prove it.

    ...and another bizare list from TotalFilm where they take an interesting idea for a list and ruin it by making the number too high. At least 30 of the movies listed are horrible and clearly don't deserve a sequel. Make reasonable sized lists and they'll be interesting. This list literally contains big hits (True Lies), cult favorites (Serenity), marginal hits that underperformed (Rocketeer), and absolute garbage which no one liked or went to go see (Battlefield Earth).

    Nice list, I'm surprised that The Assasin was even considered to be a franchise. The ones I would love to see get the sequel green light are; True Lies; although its a pipe dream now, it would've been great to see further adventures of Mr. & Mrs. Tasker (and Gib of course) In my money a major milestone in the careers of Cameron and Arnie. The other is The Saint. I don't care what people said, or still say, about it, I love this film. It isn't a perfect film but aside from Kilmer's passable performance, this film has it all. Action, suspence, an escapist story, a cool soundtrack, and Borris the Blade as a villian. However another main reason why the film works is because of the chemistry between Kilmer and Shue which, in my humble opinion, is one of the most geniune romances ever. Its sad we never got to see their relationship unfold. Although a sequel is highly unlikely; it will be great if a reboot was considered. Can someone call Christopher Nolan! The Saint and Nolan are a match made in heaven.

    I think I respect Will Ferrel even more for turning down $29 million dollars for Elf 2. You never know about Serenity/Firefly, there is a pretty loyal fanbase out there and Whedon did just make Disney $1 billion dollars.

    Jesus! Got half way through, just couldn't go on - very poor article! Slow news day was it, or did you finished all the levels on Star Wars Angry Birds? This should have been titled : '45 scheissen films that should have never been made : gladly didn't make a sequel too'! Feel all dirty & sorry that I wasted my time looking at this.

    I Am Number Four, Spirit, Battlefield Earth, Super Mario Bros, Doom, Speed Racer, Godzilla, Spawn and Masters of the Universe (to pick a few) rightfully stopped because they were c**p to begin with! This list could've easily have been top 20 and been so much more realistic. And last time I checked Planet Of The Apes and Punisher (considering Jane's short) still had franchises going. I can't believe you guys get paid for being s**t.

    @trist808 Shyamalan also stated that the bad reviews Unbreakable got at the time really effected him so he shelved the idea of a second one.

    I could maybe see Elf or Dick Tracy. The rest of these, though? I didn't bother to see the first film for many of them. And I don't think there should EVER be a sequel to Nightmare Before Christmas, The Goonies, or Office Space. Leave the modern cult classics alone!
