    I'm pretty sure Total Film did an article in a magazine a few years ago about the scariest movie ever, using the scariest clips, and basing it on heart rate. They used classics such as Exorcist, Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, and Friday the 13th ending in the boat came out on top. Even if this wasn't number one, surely it is more frightening than Fantasia or Temple of Doom. Also, dragging scene (although tainted in atmosphere due to sequels) in Paranormal Activity really shocked and terrified me. You could also have delved deeper into lesser films. A great example is Exorcist 3. Although not a brilliant film, one scene in particular with a sheet over his head really scares me every time I watch it. Obviously, the films used are classics, and renowned for being scary, hence their constant usage, however we don't want to just see the same films compiled into a list over and over.

    seconded on Exorcist 3, that scene in the hospital corridor has me stinking up the house every time!!

    Ah that Exorcist 3 scene... Every time! I just wish the writers, as selfish as this sounds, would put more detail into these features. Choose less films but up the content.

    50 moments...and you STILL miss the Kayako-in-the-bed scene from "The Grudge"? That's left me sleeping curled up foetal-style for three and a half straight years now.

    I was just gonna mention The Grudge but you beat me to it, MikeyRix! Most times when kids are scared of monsters they hide under the covers. That scene completely obliterates that security and safety zone! b*****ds!

    There was an old Piper Laurie movie called "Ruby" set in an old drive-in cinema about a gangster ghost... scared the s**t out of me.. although it's probably c**p now. Marathon Man as well.. just for the dentistry scene.

    How about the bit at the end of Godzilla when they indicated that there might be a sequel? That scared the living sh!t out of me. By the way, it's probably been said before but good work on the update to these multi-page sections of the new website! Much friendlier to navigate, well done TF!! :)

    Simon, please stop trying to be funny. Maybe you should consider trying to put a bit more detail in to these lists. Or maybe another career. I didn't laugh at this standard of humour when I was in primary school. I will never buy another copy of Total Film while you continue to churn out this embarrassing dross.

    You forgot THE EYE (original one). The "GET OUT OF MY CHAIR" or elevator scene gave me brown trousers for weeks...

    Salems Lot: The vampire child scratching at the window. should be included, this would have traumitised many youngsters back in the late 70's early 80's especially as Salems Lot was a made for TV movie.

    This is just a list of famous horror moments, not necessarily the scariest ones. And hell yes to the Grudge scene in the bed!

    Some of these are just gory, not scary. And where is Tim Curry's Pennywise? That one portrayal is responsible for 90% of coulrophobics.
