Pretty sure with Jim Carrey's "shocking" career choice, The Truman Show predates Man on the Moon (Truman opened in 1998, Moon in 1999). Also, I'm not sure some of these are "shocking choices," just unusual.

What about Tom Cruise in Magnolia? Long before he went 'bad' for Collateral.

Its not shocking, it called diversity. Actors chose different roles all the time. Its just that casting directors sometimes think out of the box. Like casting Sir Ben 'Ghandi' Kingseley as a psychotic cockney hardnut. Genius!

Bette Davis did NOT win an Oscar for What Ever Happened To Baby Jane. She was nominated but was beaten by Anne Bancroft (The Miracle Worker) that year! Also, most of those entries are not SHOCKING... they're just evolutions in the respective careers of those actors. What would be shocking is an A-list actor who suddenly appears in Direct to DVD small budget pics. Like Bela Lugosi who was a huge star and ended up in those Ed Wood films...

I dream of a sequel to The Human Centipede with the cast of Ocean's Eleven as the centipede. THAT would be shocking!

Had a blast reading through, but just a heads up -- Davis was nominated for an Oscar for Baby Jane, but she didn't win it. Crawford actually went to accept the award for the real winner that year.

Surely Abrams is an obvious choice by producers rather than shocking. The only unusual aspect is he will have helmed both Star Wars and Star Trek

The only flaw with the Mark Wahlberg "shock" is that the three supposed funny films he was in, sucked terribly.

Dirk Bogarde went from teen heart-throb in the corny Doctor movies, to playing a blackmailed gay man in Victim, (in a time when being gay was still illegal in England). Me > Josh Winning.

This list if full of "good guys gone bad." What about the opposite. For years Gary Oldman was typecast as a villain. With Sirius Black and Jim Gordon, he proved he could do virtuous, decent characters better than anyone.

Terence Stamp as Bernadette in The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert surely rates as a shock bit of casting. General Zod would not have approved.
