Idris Elba makes a stand
Action, villains and more
Universal postpone production in wake of Paul Walker's tragic death
The Villain: When lingering in the corner of a child’s darkened bedroom, a craggy shadow with an outstretched arm, he’s terrifying. Until the film’s climax, when he’s revealed as a tacky mash-up of Darth Maul and Freddy Krueger. Suddenly the film’s about as scary as The Phantom Menace.Crappest Moment: In The Further, dad Josh (Patrick Wilson) attempts to escape the Red-Faced Demon, who starts banging along the house’s walls. Whatever happened to subtlety?

Well, I liked Cain in "Robocop 2", can't blame the bad CGI...it's been a while since the movie was made. I also like the Creeper in "Jeepers Creepers" and especially Über-Jason in "Jason X"...what a brainless, but fun movie. Gets too less love. Another guilty-pleasure missing here: "Commando" ... a fun movie. But Bennett always seemed a little fatty and not really threatening for me. But at least he served as a good victim for one of Arnies most famous one-liners: Let off some steam, Bennett!

Bit crass to comment on Raul Julia looking ill in Street Fighter given the man died just after completing filming.
Dec 11th 2012, 9:41
Yeah, the fact that Raul Julia WAS terminally ill during Streetfighter makes it all the more tragic and TF's dig is just disrespectful.
Dec 11th 2012, 9:59
Few more things.. 1) This is the second article in as many days to feature Jack Frost raping a woman. (you really guys need to get out more). 2) My god, Jeremy Irons has been in a lot of shyte. 3) Complaining that Ivan Ooze is rubbish in a film about POWER RANGERS is kind of pointless. and yes I can't believe he is played by Belloq either! 4) Its fair to assume that Raimi hated the fact that Venom was imposed on his film by the studios, that he went out of his way to ruin the character. 5) Drake in Blade: Trinity is nowhere as bad as Richard Roxburgh in Van Helsing. Combined with ropey effects, roaring and strutting, Roxburghs Dracula is so OTT he is practically on Mars!
Dec 11th 2012, 10:18
What was so bad about The Red Faced Demon, or The Kreeper? And Thulsa Doom was an excellent villian!! I think that you're really "reaching" on this top 50 Total Film!!!!
Dec 11th 2012, 10:32
I like Urban Legend. Female killers are rare enough.
Dec 11th 2012, 10:35
Fair point @Hadouken76 and @piffle, have edited to reflect our genuine affection for Raul Julia. (Street Fighter still sucked.)
Dec 11th 2012, 10:52
Sorry Josh, inserting the word "sadly" doesn't really take away from the fact that its a pretty crappy thing to use to criticise him in a throwaway website list. Julia was lumbered with a terrible script, imaginationless direction, and having to act against some truly poor performers - no amount of 'presence' could have saved the role. On some of the other points, Bullseye was the best thing about Daredevil with Farrell's deliciously over the top delivery being hugely entertaining. Thulsa Doom in Conan is also brilliant - James Earl Jones delivers some lines that would make lesser actors weep with cracking authority and makes Doom a bad b*****d. No argument about Nuclear Man though, he really was terrible.
Dec 11th 2012, 11:19
Who's Elizabeth Shannon?
Dec 11th 2012, 11:51
Ok, so I guess I'm the only one to step up for Dennis Nedry? He's great in Jurassic Park, playing the bumbling dufus perfectly. He's fat, ungainly and very non-threatening to look at, the complete opposite of the creatures his scheming has released upon the heroes. And also what IT nerd have you ever met that gives a hoot for anything other than IT? Nedry couldn't care less about dinosaurs. He's hired for his IT skills and it would be quite out of character for him to know what a Dilophosarus is..
Dec 11th 2012, 12:30
Not Nick Park, RAY Park!
I know the man isn't Orson Welles, but at least pay him a modicum of respect!
Dec 11th 2012, 13:33
@Chipko - Got Chicken Run on the brain.
Dec 11th 2012, 13:34
Nick Park created Wallace and Gromit lol. Mr Winning does it again.
Dec 11th 2012, 13:52
Surely all 3 Batman And Robin villains should have been on this list? Or if it had to be only one, Bane's the crappest of the three.
Dec 11th 2012, 14:03
i liked the green goblin! willem defo is creepy as f**k
Dec 11th 2012, 14:08
haha Dennis Nedry shouldn't even be on this list, and i thought the insidious demon was quite scary
Dec 11th 2012, 14:14
Sorry total film but this list is weak. Too many bad choices too early. Urban Legend villain was good for the genre as was Green Goblin. I dont know what your criteria is but it was weak on this one, usually I agree but not this time. And I second, third, quadtruple the flames for getting on Julia for Street Fighter. Disrespectful and unnecessary.
Dec 11th 2012, 14:30
was expecting to see christopher eccleston in gone in 60 seconds on this list.... i would include Dan Akroyd in Grosse pointe blank, he's good in the role but as an assasin he's awful & gets taken out by a television
Dec 11th 2012, 14:42
NIce one Josh Winning, wish more sites could man-up (hello, Yahoo). Anyway, I thought Whiplash from Iron Man 2 would be here, he spends the whole movie building a powersuit and gets pasted within 5 minutes! Also, (as Cracked pointed out) Stark LEAVES the army of killer robots to massacre the poplace. W.T.F.
Dec 11th 2012, 15:47
I thought this list was gonna be a bit more clever and consist of awful villians like Irina Spalko. (Cate Blanchet) in Inde 4 and General Grevious (seriously, he's a droid with a throat infection). Instead, we're getting a purple monster from Power Rangers and King Koopa, and the fat guy from Jurassic Park isn't exactly what springs to mind when you think, 'Movie Villian'. Seriously these top 50 lists are getting worse and worse, just make it top 15 or 10 and go into a bit more detail
Dec 11th 2012, 15:49
Although fairplay to ya Josh for including Green Goblin and Venom,, truly and utterly awful villians.
Dec 11th 2012, 16:40
I thought the creeper was a cool villain!! looking forward to jeepers 3
Dec 11th 2012, 16:49
If you had to choose a villain from the X-Men saga, you should have mentioned the Juggernaut, b***h!
Dec 11th 2012, 16:52
Other terrible villains : Frank Langella as Skeletor in Masters of the Universe, Richard Pryor in Superman 3, Parker Posey in Blade : Trinity AND Superman Returns, Kevin Spacey's Lex Luthor in Superman Returns and whoever played the villain in Mission : Impossible 2!
Dec 11th 2012, 17:01
I honestly didnt know Louis Spence was a vampire.
Dec 11th 2012, 17:19
@barryc - General Grievous is in there. Good call on Indy 4. @Toursiveu - What's with the Skeletor hate? Sure he's turned into a Vader rip-off for the movie, but it's Frank Langella!
Dec 11th 2012, 17:38
the scorpion king has to be one of the worst
Dec 11th 2012, 18:11
I think Josh should lay off Bullseye. Colin Farrel was easily the best thing about Daredevil. Smart, funny, badass and charaismatic enough to leave Ben Affleck in the dust.
Dec 11th 2012, 21:05
The Creeper having wings was The Best Bit in an otherwise fantastic film, everyone watching literally s**t bricks when he escaped lol.
And Thulsa Doom? Come on, he was a great villain, and without him, there would have been NO CONAN!!!!!
Dec 11th 2012, 22:45
I've got to agree with all of these except Thulsa Doom....
Worst movie villain ever, Radioactive Man? Yes, yes and three times yes...
Keep up the good work mate!
Dec 12th 2012, 0:59
I'm sorry, but any list that includes "Mr. Freeze" as the third worst movie villain and doesn't even MENTION Uma Thurman's terrible performance as Poison Ivy loses a lot of credibility. At least Arnold was ACTING, even having one or two moments of genuine emotion. He was let down by the script, but he (at the very least) tried his best. Aside from Michael Gough, he's the best part of the movie. Uma Thurman was just awful, awful, awful.
Dec 12th 2012, 1:14
Villains don't necessarily need to be scary.
Dec 12th 2012, 14:24
I thought the Creeper was genuinely scary for the first half of the first film, but when you found out about his wings and saw him up close it did become a bit of a joke. @Bandit 1 - good shout with Bennett. He has to be the least threatening, most overly-camp action-movie villain ever. I always thought he looked like a fat Freddie Mercury
Dec 13th 2012, 14:21
Good shout on the demon from Insidious. That film made me laugh out loud in aaaallll the wrong places. And @SiMan agreed on the creeper. He was much more threatening when you had no idea what he was. The big cheesy evil grin ruins it slightly.
Dec 14th 2012, 18:43
Sorry but what was with all the rattle throwing from the pram about the Raul Julia comment? There was no disrespect or slander in that sentence get a grip guys, the man did look ill in the part and it did affect the overall performance, the guy was a good actor but fact is fact.
Dec 15th 2012, 15:46
my favorite comment is the one about "the happening" it cracked me up. do we actually care? LOL
Dec 16th 2012, 11:28
"Frank Langella as Skeletor in Masters of the Universe" should never even enter your brain when thinking of worst villains as it was an awesome turn with a fantastic speech in the last act.
Dec 17th 2012, 22:42
Total film i am disappointment that you have included Thulsa Doom as one of the worst villains ever are you serious Thulsa Doom was perfectly played by James Earl Jones when he chops off conans mums head only demonstrates how evil this man really is also the scene where one of his followers commits suicide shows how much power he has and the speech were he says how much power he has and not even remembering killing conan's mother was done perfectly he was bloody terrifying in the movie confused by your choice here should be removed from this list.
Jan 22nd 2013, 4:55
Great list :)
Feb 20th 2013, 9:11
I thought Timothy Olyphant's villain in Die Hard 4 was pretty wet.
Good callon General Greivous. The worst bad guy in the most disappointing 3 films ever!
Sep 15th 2013, 0:27
Come on. You put Cain from Robocop 2 on this list and forget to mention Otomo from Robocop 3? I thought he was even worse than Cain.
Nov 2nd 2013, 12:45
Green goblin is better than total film thinks
