6 Kids Movies Wasted On Kids

Cool cartoons fit for grown-ups…

A Nightmare Before Christmas

The Film: Jack Skellington, Pumpkin-king of Halloweentown, has grown tired of the same old Halloween every year, and decides to try his hand at Christmas instead.

Why Kids Love It: Infectious songs. Visual gags. Ghosts, ghouls and skeletons. Shrunken heads. Snakes, bugs and all things creepy. Plus it’s really short (76mins). Did we mention the songs? Kids just love to sing-a-long.

Why It’s Wasted On Kids: It’s about a mid-life crisis! That’s the problem with little ones – no life experience.  TNBC deals with themes of unrequited love, unfulfilled lives and unexplored dreams. Witty dialogue. Wittier lyrics. Children have never even heard of Oingo Boingo. Kids, man.

Best Bit for Adults: Jack’s constant, innocent mispronouncing of ‘Sandy Claws’.

Great article! But I have to add that most of our fairy tales contain adult undertones and sexual imagery. Psychologists have told us it's a way to explain the adult world via analogy to young minds. Of course, they could be wrong. The Brothers Grimm & Uncle Walt just might be horny old men.

I agree with BaldMelon, great article! However there is a small mistake in the Pixar segment. "Growing old" is the theme of Toy Story 2, rather than the original Toy Story. The theme of the first film is more along the lines of "acceptance and teamwork."

I had to register just so I could say this: When I first saw Toy Story 2 in theaters, I was 10 years old. My favorite moment of the film was, and is to this day, Zurg's big reveal. =)

Hook should definitely be on this list. While it may be shiny and slapsticky at times, beneath it lies such great, sad tragedy. Peter losing his childhood and innocence to become a money grubbing a*s, Tinkerbell hopelessly in love with him forever even when their relationship would be impossible. It deals with growing old and dealing with it, as well as what it takes to be a good parent. Tragically underrated movie.

I think the best bit for adults concerning Shrek (it might be Shrek 2 actually) is when the knights or whatever arrest Puss in Boots and he has a bag of cat nip on him and he is like 'I swear its not mine.' hahah priceless.
