The Film: Nine Queens (2000)
The Hook: Gaston Pauls and Ricardo Darin star as swindlers Juan and Marcos, who decide to team up and use a counterfeit stamp – the titular “Nine Queens” – to grab cash from a rich Spaniard who is unable to check its authenticity.
But things get complicated when the forgery is stolen.
Why is it cool? Spoiler-revealing twist time! Turns out it’s all an ultra-complex scheme run by Juan to get money from Marcos in revenge for him hoodwinking Juan’s sister.
Could it work in real life? Stamp frauds are very popular, and our old pal the Internet is at the fore once again. A New York stamp dealer spent nine years – count ‘em – nabbing dosh from collectors via eBay.
Despite getting his account shut down, the FBI think he’ll soon be back in business. Maybe it's time to start collecting comic-books instead.
