Western, SF and CGI remakes, but no rom-coms?

Akira Kurosawa passed ten years ago today, but his legacy will live forever, not least because Hollywood seems particularly fond of remaking his film Seven Samurai.

We’ve had The Magnificent Seven, Battle Beyond The Stars, A Bug’s Life and a straight Samurai remake is due in 2009. But how else could Hollywood plunder the template?

7. Horror

Title: Seven Severed Heads

Plot: A suburban American town is being plagued by a series of brutal murders by a gang of weird killers. The townsfolk hire seven ex-cops to take down the slashers, with bloody results.

6. Rom-com

Title: Seven Suitors

Plot: Our successful female lead wants to stay single, but constantly gets hit on by inappropriate men. She hires seven men to pretend to be her boyfriend, one perfect for each friendship group, with hilarious results.

5. Teen comedy

Title: Seven Ugly Guys

Plot: Our geek hero wants to be popular, but no matter how hard he tries, jocks keep picking on him. So he hires seven out-of-town nerds to hang out with him, so he’ll look cool by comparison.

4. Gangster flick

Title: Seven Bullets

Plot: A small town gang is being leaned on by the mob. So they bring seven old-school assassins with nothing to lose out of retirement to take down the Godfather.

3. Superhero flick

Title: SuperSeven

Plot: When a team of real-life vigilantes get their asses kicked by a new gang of criminals, they invent a machine that allows them to tear classic characters from comic-books and into the real world. Think of the cross-over potential!

2. Police Thriller

Title: Seven Se7ens

Plot: When a plucky young detective can’t track down a vicious serial killer, he enlists seven wise old black cops to assist him in the search for clues.

1. Slacker flick

Title: Seven McJobs

Plot: When our slacker hero is forced to pay unreasonably high rent by his parents who want him to leave home, he convinces his six buddies to get minimum wage jobs with him, so they can keep playing videogames in his basement. Starring Seth Rogen.
