The Judgement on Gotham Specials from DC were a grimey, ultra violent trip. Farfetched, but imagine Gordon calling on Dredd to 'hunt' Batman.

@BenCh Very nice, we'd love to see Batman and Dredd having to team up to take down Judge Death. Never in Nolan's world, but it's a fan film we'd love to see.

You're right and giving it some more thought, it wouldn't quite work in Nolan's Universe. A great way to re-boot the Dredd franchise though ;)...

Would love to see Hush or Jason Todd's first outing as Red Hood being the villain. My money's on The Riddler though (yawn). I don't think Nolan will be bullied into casting a big star in the role. I'd kill myself if Depp got the role.

The Robin angle could work if you had a shaved head, batter and bruised Freddie Highmore whos in an out of foster care because of the death of his parents and is reluctant to go with Bruce Wayne cos he thnks he a bit of a perv, (suspicious of why a billionaire would adopt a young boy), and he doesnt become Robin until Batman 4

I agree absolutely no Robin!! The Black Mask or Talia Al Ghul villians would intrigue me most, but have no doubt next villain is likely to be Riddler (sadly).

As a Batfanatic, if I went into detail about why I think each villain could/couldn't work it would almost literally be a novel. So I'll just say this: it's going to be Catwoman. Bats is still in mourning over Rachel and Selina's purrfect (ugh, sorry) to exploit him by being simultaneously coldhearted and tactless over Rachel's death and overwhelmingly alluring. I don't actually like Catwoman much, but it's going to happen, probably with another woman as the lead antagonist - Talia, maybe? Can't see Nolan bringing in Ivy and although Harley is my idol, it'd be difficult to work her in without repeating the style of Mr J.... Damn - stopping now before this gets epic.

Been thinking about villains for the next bat movie for some time with possible storylines etc. What I can come up with is basically the following: Starts in Arkham with a break in and shooting (twice in the head) of Falcone (still in there from BB), then a lady by the name of Selina Kyle arrives cat burglaries increase (with an oddly mob based focus). But in the larger picture the bat has to figure out who is responsible for this, queue the Riddler he's been doing petty crimes all over Gotham leaving clues to his crimes purely to prove how smart he is, the bat brings him in, Riddler declares he knows who the murderer is which leads to a Hannibal Lector-esque series of events with Riddler giving riddles as clues. Meanwhile Brucey has been chumming up with Selina Kyle. Things accelerate when the Bat discovers the Cat has connections to the mob and wants to take down the murderer herself. Soon with various plot twists and cameos from other villains (Zsaz and a more humanised Croc) leads us to the mastermind, will it be Two Face? Black Mask? or Mr J? and who exactly is that hot new psychologist at Arkham with a distinctly Bronx accent?

Wow, never realized how s**t Batman's villains are. So with those slim pickings, i'd like to see Zsaz, Riddler, Penguin as main villians and Talia Al Ghul as a secondary set-up character. Like how they handled Two-Face. Saying that, i'd love them to bring back Dent. @ FindingNoemi. Harley would be great, but isn't she Joker's main squeeze? Bring in Harley, you gotta bring back Joker don't you? And who's gonna want to fill the clown sized shoes Ledger left?

If they are gonna put the Riddler in then he has to be a quiet calm character, maybe like Brian Cox's Lector or if any of you remember the old Batman Animated series the Riddler there mixed with the clock king, cold and emotionless. To be honest this is going to be the last Nolan/Bale Bat movie, they have a trilogy contract and no matter how good they are in the roles of director/star they will get bored of basically making another and another one. So, in Nolan's hands I think he can pull off the multi-villain thing. But 2-3 villains should do. However much I would like Harvey Dent and Two Face to return he won't he's dead, they declare him dead in the movie, Eckhart, Nolan and Bale have all said he's dead so he's dead no more Two Face, a natural successor would be Black Mask. The Nolan Bat-verse deals a lot with the gang land side of things and given that Selena Kyle is the illegitimate daughter of Falcone a bit of daughterly revenge would be a nice way to end the old school gang bosses in Gotham. So, if you want 2 villains go for Black Mask, the Cat. Nolan will never use the Penguin as he hates hims, dito Robin. But Riddler would be one to add for more of a psychological base providing there is no Jim Carrey gurning to him and he is not dealt with as a second class Joker (which they often do for some reason).

There were at least 3 villains in Begins and 3 or 4 in Dark Knight. If its costumes we're obsessing about then it doesn't matter. It's the quality of the writing etc that matters. Spider-Man 3's problem wasn't the number of villains it was the fact that Venom was forced into the Story. This took too much away from The Sandman and the Venom has to be in it or else, studio bullying, led to the character just appearing out of nowhere, first by the alien half just falling out of space next Parker then just randomly bonding with Brock. Goblin was fine as he'd had 2 whole films of Origin to back him up. X2, which was widely considered the best comic movie until Dark Knight had not only more villains, but two completely different sets of villains, with The Brotherhood and Stryker. This added to the core of 5 X-men and Bobby and Rogue. It was fine because the story was 1st class, and still one of the better Gulf war, war on terror, Bush dynasty commentaries seen on film. Even with X-Men 3 the main problem was that it was too short and could have done with a lot more time to flesh out some of the newer characters. With Scarecrow, Ras and Joker (I just can’t see anyone else playing him) all having back stories already told there’s no problem with having too many villains to explain. Of course the best idea may simply be to have NO costumed villains at all in this one. The organised crime angle has been well worked in the other 2 so there’s room to expand on that. Have Batman actually being the world’s greatest detective and have it be a thriller. Save us all from Robin, although Nolan has set up a reason for Bruce choosing a sidekick. In the new Frontier Batman accepts Robin after his reputation as a scary killer leads a child he recues to scream in fear at Batman, to be more scared of Batman than his kidnapers. This lead him to say, when questioned about taking on Robin, “I didn’t get into this to frighten children” . (Or something like that. Get Robin, kill him at the end and then Bruce can say “no more partners” . and we can be rid of the Robin idea for good.

If the Riddler could be taken into context with some real-life psychos, like the Zodiac Killer, we might have ourselves a real nail-biter. ...Otherwise, I'm all for Batman/Judge Dredd Vs. Judge Death. One of the best comics to ever come out. Not a Nolan movie, but someone should make that at some point.

Many great comments here, cheers all! @Hadouken76 - I particularly agree re: Deadshot, totally...was at great pains to leave him out of this one. Agonised over that one for a while! @Rasputin - I can see your logic, but I'm not sold on Catwoman for #3. Could well be proved wrong, but I don't see Nolan *heavily* revisiting territory that's already been charted relatively heavily... @FindingNoemi and all the other Harley fans - absolutely, and I really think she could figure without having to find a post-Heath Joker to sit her with...after all, he's in Arkham. Couldn't he just be her offscreen 'puppeteer', as it were? @therealeverton - you had me after your first three lines. (Not that the rest of it wasn't gold!) @DanielMcA Arf! Touché... Again, good stuff from everyone - nice to see you pitching in with such cool ideas.

Personally I would love to see clayface as a villain. I know that it would take extensive CGI work but why cany it be half cgi and half make up to some degree. I think physically he gives batman a run for his money and the fact that he can transform into almost anything kind of turns him into this menacing figure. I don't know I think it would be cool and I have a real soft spot for the husk of clay. Batman the animated series FTW.

I can see Harley as the leader of a Jokerz gang, similar to the one in the Batman Beyond series- creating some ambiguity as to the fate of Heath's Joker because he could easily pop in like he did with the bank robbery in DK. As for Robin, I'm inclined to think Nolan goes with a Robin-Anarky hybrid. Anarky was first written as a possible Robin #3 in the comics, and by the late 90s had turned against initiatory violence- I would think he'd go after Nolan's Batman for killing what appeared to be " one of the few good politicians out there", find out what happened and not stand for the cover-up because he doesn't belief in sacrifice or deceit. To which Nolan's Batman says he's too soft, too idealistic.

Without a doubt in my mind it should be the Knightfall story from the early 90's. That has the most potential to work within the Nolan/Batman franchise. The story goes: A man known as Kane breaks out all the villains from Arkham Asylum and Batman tires himself out rounding them all up and putting them back. This is when Kane strikes by attacking Batman and breaking his back. While he is recovering, Bruce Wayne makes a trusted friend Batman in his absence. But this new Batman takes it too far by killing criminals. Something the true Batman would never do. So once he is recovered Bruce Wayne once more becomes Batman and takes down the "evil" Batman and Kane. Gordon can then blame the killing of Harvey Dent on the fake. It works!

While I love Catwoman (although I can't see anyone quite pulling it off as well as Miss Pheiffer did), and would be partial to Talia al Ghul or even the Riddler, if he was done as a twisted character like he was in the 'Dark Knight, Dark City' storyline about 15 years ago, I can't believe no-one has seen the perfect story opportunity for Batman 3, and one which would not entirely coincidentally involve my favourite Bat-villain. Picture the scene: Batman is now on the run, but he's still doing what needs to be done in Gotham, so in our opening sequence, we see him bring down an assassin who is reputed to be the 'best shot in the world' -- yep, my man Deadshot. No sooner is Deadshot jailed than a shadowy government operative who has reasons for wanting to see Batman stopped (cue some government conspiracy or other). Said operative is putting together a black-ops team that will bring the Dark Knight down before he figures out the consipracy, with team members having their sentences commuted to time served, should they survive! The Suicide Squad not only ties in nicely with the fact that Bats is already on the run at the end of the Dark Knight, but allows players like Deadshot, Bronze Tiger, Captain Boomerang (with razor sharp weapons like the kid in Mad Max 2) and possibly even a certain overgrown steroid junkie called Bane (as long as he's done realistically, rather than as the caricature he was in the pile of poo that was Batman & Robin) to be brought in, hopefully without impacting the 'too many villains ruins the movie' rule. And if you really want to twist the story, the final showdown sees Bats having to take down the government agent (and former soldier) who has put the Squad together, only to dicsover that the man he has to beat is none onther than Slade Wilson, The Terminator. If anyone could do it, and most especially do justice to one of the best comic villains ever, it's Nolan!!

I dont think they should make someone else fill Heath Ledgers role as Joker, If they did they should do something along the lines of what they did with The Crow by using death mask, old recorded dialog and stand in's etc, Wouldnt hold up though so best not too, They could maybe do Clay face but as kinda "catch me if you can" kinda style killer and conman

Harley Quinn should be brought in because she wants to seek vengeance because Batman killed her lover (the joker) (technically since no one is replacing the joker he is either dead or in arkham) but she isn’t evil enough to do it by herself (because in the comics and the show her orders came from the joker) she needs an extra hand. (insert new villain here [preferably a chick]). And as much as I hate robin…(I think he should be called something less boyish like Night wing or something) batman will need help to take out more than one villin. My whole idea might sound stupid but i think it makes sense lol. I also think that no matter what nolan does it will be a bad a*s ending to the batman films.

I'd like to see a newer villain and 'Hush' would be great. I think the twists of the 'Hush' story line could appeal to Nolan plus it would be better than trying to slot a character like Catwoman or penguin into the 'near realism' that nolan has given the Batman movies. If a less mainstream director like Aronofski (My choice) or Fincher was directing the next Batman movie and gave it a more Gothic tone i'd like to see a Catwoman/Joker tag team up.

P.S. I can'r see why another actor can't play Joker next time around. Sure Ledger did a good job but as different as his joker was to Nicholson's maybe another actor could take Joker in a new direction again, someone like Daniel Day-Lewis/Tom Hardy would be awesome as Joker. Heath Ledger is dead, not the Joker.
