Best & Worst: Oscar Speeches
A guide for this year's nominees...
By Josh WinningJan 23rd 2010Worst: Sir Laurence Olivier
The Award: Honorary Award in 1979
The Speech: We’re not denying he deserved it, but dear God this is one for after you’ve had a few drinks. During a long, rambling oration, Olivier talks about “firmaments” and “euphoria”. He sort of gets away with it because he’s Sir Laurence, but it’s still pretty dreadful.
Afterward, a young Jon Voight looks like he’s just had his mind blown. Diane Keaton looks like she’s thinking about what’s for dinner...
"In the great wealth, the great firmament of your nations’ generosity," chunders Olivier, "this particular choice may perhaps be found by future generations as a trifle eccentric. But the mere fact of it, the prodigal, pure human kindness of it, must be seen as a beautiful star in that firmament.
Which shines upon me at this moment, dazzling me a little, but filling me with warmth and the extraordinary elation the euphoria that happens to so many of us as the first breath or the majestic glow of a new tomorrow.”

Clint Eastwood and Gene Hackman's speeches when they won Best Director and Supporting Actor for Unforgiven are just pure class. They made us understand that they don't take all this seriously, they did it with humor and dignity. Worst speech ever in my opinion? Julia Roberts winning for Erin Brockovich. But maybe it's because I just can't stand her...

Christ! The worst thing about geeks is that they cant understand feelings and this is such a case! Gwenyth Paltrow was over happy and so was Halle Berry when they won and their reactions were understandable. Grow up, get a life and move out of your parents basement kiddos of Totalfilm.
