Ridley Scott’s grungy, beautifully tactile glimpse into a post-apocalyptic future would be nothing but an attractive empty shell without Hauer. The director cast the Dutch actor without even asking him to audition, basing his decision on previous Hauer performances he’d caught.
As replicant Batty, Hauer’s at once terrifyingly intelligent and physically a force to be reckoned with. Even Philip K Dick approved, commending Hauer as “the perfect Batty - cold, Aryan, flawless”, while Hauer himself singles the film out as his favourite.

How can you do a piece on Rutger Hauer and not even mention ANY film from the seventies? The four films he made with Paul Verhoeven (Tuks Fruit, Keetje Tippel, Soldier Of Orange ans Spetters) are all extraordinary films who show his youthful magnetism and dangerosity. By the way... The worst films on his CV (by far) are 1983's A Breed Apart (with Kathleen Turner) and the goddawful Crossworlds, from 1997.

Beyond Justice clocks in at over 2 hours....that's because it's originally a 2 part mini series which has been edited together for home video. As a 2 parter it's quite good actually. You also missed 'Wanted: Dead or Alive' great action thriller....gotta love the last scene! As fellow Dutchman I have to say that you indeed missed the movies he made with Paul Verhoeven...and Jan de Bont as DP. Turks Fruit and Spetters are great!

The man is just simply cool, so thanks TotalFilm for the post. Still think you overlooked "Blood of Heroes" which is a shame since it´s definitely also one of his best, and in my book a fine sci-fi that is generally overlooked and underrated.

Ladyhawke has absolutely the worst music of any film I've seen. It's dreadful and puts me off watching it any time it's been on. I'd love to see a version with someone taking a new crack at the music.

I agree with Toursiveu, some of his best are the Dutch movies from the 70s. I recommend Turks Fruit and Soldaat van Oranje. Subtitles won't kill you!
