The Film: Oh it’s a right pain being young isn’t it, especially when you’re the star of the school football team and look like Tom Cruise? Wait, hang on a minute….Tom tries his hand at adolescent angst with lacklustre results. He’s looking for a way to escape his one-horse, economically crippled hometown, and gets a crack at salvation when the big game comes along...
Director Michael Chapman piles on every sports-movie cliché in the book, leaving you well and truly exhausted long before the inevitable happy ending comes lumbering over the horizon. When a movie makes Varsity Blues look good by comparison, you know you’re in trouble.
Charm or Smarm? Adolescent hand-wringing takes centre-stage here, although the face-off with Craig T. Nelson’s mean old coach shows a bit of authority-baiting pizzazz.

@ 1: Agreed, but could be to do with how dreadful the rest of Tropic Thunder was.

Cruise plays Hoffmans 'older' brother in Rain Man??! Is this correct cos Tom was 26 and Hoffman was 51!!! Surely Tom was meant to be playing the 'younger' brother - or is this just some crazy time-travelling plot hole that we've all been missing for the past 20 yrs??

Obviously George Wales has never eally watched All The Right Moves. Cruise's character is a high school football player trying to get a college scholarship. Had this article been a football game, Wales would be flagged for "Unsportsmanlike Stupidity".

these days, it seems like someone (or something culty)has given Tom a lobotomy! Now he just makes films for image appeal. Time to go back to basics! and mayb buy a new brain

Am I the only person in the world, other the Neil Jordan, who thought Tom was great in Interview with the Vampire?

I agree with scuzz80 - he's great in Interview with a Vamp, and definitely steals the show in Tropic Thunder and, although not mentioned, I kinda liked War of the Worlds too...
